Staff Sergeant Kenneth E. Stumpf

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. S/Sgt. Stumpf distinguished himself while serving as a squad leader of the 3d Platoon, Company C, on a search and destroy mission. As S/Sgt. Stumpf's company approached a village, it encountered a North Vietnamese rifle company occupying a well fortified bunker complex. During the initial contact, 3 men from his squad fell wounded in front of a hostile machinegun emplacement. The enemy's heavy volume of fire prevented the unit from moving to the aid of the injured men, but S/Sgt. Stumpf left his secure position in a deep trench and ran through the barrage of incoming rounds to reach his wounded comrades. He picked up 1 of the men and carried him back to the safety of the trench. Twice more S/Sgt. Stumpf dashed forward while the enemy turned automatic weapons and machineguns upon him, yet he managed to rescue the remaining 2 wounded squad members. He then organized his squad and led an assault against several enemy bunkers from which continuously heavy fire was being received He and his squad successfully eliminated 2 of the bunker positions, but one to the front of the advancing platoon remained a serious threat. Arming himself with extra hand grenades, S/Sgt. Stumpf ran over open ground, through a volley of fire directed at him by a determined enemy, toward the machinegun position. As he reached the bunker, he threw a hand grenade through the aperture. It was immediately returned by the occupants, forcing S/Sgt. Stumpf to take cover. Undaunted, he pulled the pins on 2 more grenades, held them for a few seconds after activation, then hurled them into the position, this time successfully destroying the emplacement. With the elimination of this key position, his unit was able to assault and overrun the enemy. S/Sgt. Stumpf's relentless spirit of aggressiveness, intrepidity, and ultimate concern for the lives of his men, are in the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the U.S. Army.

What Makes Us Human?

Did Descartes have it right? “I think, therefore, I am”? Or maybe Twain’s observation that “humans are the only creatures who blush…or need to”? Fairy tales and speculative fiction are awash with the theme, of what it means to be truly human. Wooden Pinocchio wants to be a real boy. Silicone and steel android Data longs to know what it is to be human, despite the irony that the longing is itself a human emotion. He is curious about what it means to be curious. Curiouser and curiouser! Strange visitors from another planet are raised by humans to embrace a code of decency and honor. Others come and fall in love... does love make us human?

And what of those who, became somehow more than human? Radioactive spider bites, bombardment with gamma radiation, mutations of the human genome…at what point can it be said that a human transcends humanity and becomes homo superior?

Now imagine having those philosophical musings, discussing and arguing the respective points over the course of ten years. College boy conundrums? Speculation at a seminary? Meditations at a monastery?
No. A discussion about...the level of taxes on...toys.

The forthcoming Avengers movie, directed by Joss Whedon and expected May 4 from Walt Disney Pictures, depicts the Marvel superhero group teaming up to save the Earth from utter destruction.

Saving the world is ordinary fare for superheroes, especially teams like the Avengers and the X-Men. But one of the biggest battles ever fought in the Marvel universe took place in the real world, a historic fight that lasted 10 years and crossed America.

The clash ended quietly in 2003, with a monumental, six-figure legal ruling by the U.S. government: The X-Men and many other superheroes simply aren’t human.

Or more precisely, they’re not dolls, which, according to the U.S. Customs Bureau, represent “only human beings.” They’re toys, which represent “animals or non-human creatures.”

What’s the difference? Gazillions of dollars.

Even though it sounds like the sort of discussion the nerds on The Big Bang Theory might discuss, this was big business.

The U.S. government waded into the “mutant or mortal” battle 19 years ago at ports in Los Angeles and Seattle after Customs officials there classified several large shipments of action figures, including the X-Men, as “dolls” instead of “toys.”

But labeling the figures as “dolls” made importing the X-Men nearly twice as expensive as they would have been as “toys,” facing a 12 percent tax rather than a 6.8 percent tax.

...Recognizing the difference between toys and dolls, international trade lawyers Sherry Singer and Indie Singh saw an opportunity to save Marvel a lot of money by getting the X-Men, along with Marvel’s other action figures, including the Hulk, Spider-Man, and Iron Man, reclassified as toys.

At this point, one is hard pressed whether to laugh or cry. To think that for ten years lawyers have been working, on both sides, and expert witnesses have been testifying whether Barbie should be taxed at a higher rate than Wolverine, reminds me of another Bizarro world I read about when I was younger.

Does the government really have a vested interest in whether or not the Human Torch is more human than torch? I know it is in the DNA of every bureaucrat to micromanage every aspect of our lives, but at some point, can't we decide that the government we have is more than we really ever needed? When our toys are categorized, not by weight, or the amount of polystyrene or paint, but by the philosophical backstory of their characters???

I suppose I could have titled this "What is a doll?" But, would that have piqued your human curiosity and caused you to read this far? And would you have had as much of a surprise making the hyperspace leap from comic book heroes to taxes and tariffs?

This is but one more illustration of the bloated bureaucracy that nibbles away at our economic freedoms and attempts to regulate every aspect of our lives. It's way past time to start taking our country back from our wooden headed, would be masters and their arbitrary rules and regulations.

Equal rights for G.I.Joe! In the meantime, before we can roll back this overly burdensome and somewhat ridiculous over regulation, I suggest that Mattel put out a comic book where Barbie, Ken and Skipper all get bitten by radioactive spiders...

The folks at Mattel can show their gratitude to me with a small percentage of the tax savings realized...

Folks, I was apparently one of a diminishing number of Americans with the stomach to listen to Barry drone on for an hour on his SOTU speech. But, as a public service to my readers, I did watch it, so imagine my surprise when the guy who gave the speech gets it so terribly wrong!

Obama in his weekly radio address:

On Tuesday, in my State of the Union Address, I laid out a blueprint for an economy built to last – an economy built on American manufacturing, American energy, skills for American workers, and a renewal of American values.

"Blueprint"?? Has the Community Organizer-in-Chief ever even seen a blueprint? A blueprint for a house might include details like a 16" center on studs or the use of #12 Romex* to the recessed kitchen lighting. It would diagram where the plumbing and wiring were located in the walls, the size of the door frames and a list of materials to be used. In short, an extremely, minutely detailed document. One that could be used to construct the same house precisely, either once or a thousand times.

What the President called a "blueprint", was at best, a wish list. It was more like:

"Hey! Will somebody build me a house?"

The President's SOTU was very short on specifics. About the only specifics he named were the creation of yet more bureaucratic agencies while simultaneously telling his audience, he'd asked Congress to grant him the authority to consolidate the federal bureaucracy. I'll make it smaller by growing it bigger. We have to destroy the village in order to save it!

"We should also stem the corrosive influence of money in politics"

You mean like accepting credit card contributions from overseas to one's campaign without verifying the donors? Little late for that, isn't it Barry?

But let's go back to his initial statement, (which is nearly identical to the one he closed with, and is probably not at all focused grouped or will show up in his stump speeches between now and November):

an economy built on American manufacturing, American energy, skills for American workers, and a renewal of American values.

"American energy", Mr. President? Are you saying that we need energy to build the economy? Maybe that's the reason the economy has been so p*ss poor ever since you took office?
Tell us about the low sulfur coal fields off limit to mining in the west? Tell us about the million acres of uranium rich land recently put off limits by your administration?

You brag about the increase in oil production, but because those things take years due to the stranglehold of bureaucracy, those gains were the result of previous administrations and not your policies. The Obama energy policies keep ANWR out of production, have shut down access to vast oil reserves in the Gulf of Mexico, currently being exploited by other countries. Your environmentalist wacko bases has not eliminated drilling in the Gulf, just American drilling and American jobs.

One of the criticisms sometimes leveled at American businesses, is that they have large amounts of cash that they are refusing to invest, solely to make this President "look bad".
Aside from the economic illiteracy of why businesses invest, the uncertainty of Obama's tax plans and Obamacare have businesses running scared to invest, since they have no knowledge or certainty as to what their costs might be in six months, let alone three to five years!

However, this does bring to my mind an analogy of someone sitting on wealth and refusing to release it into the economy, and that someone is currently sleeping with the President's wife! Barack Obama could tell the EPA to stand down or minimize their destruction of coal based energy in this country, except that he approves that destruction. As a candidate, he said if he were president, he would bankrupt the coal power industry. Fortunately for us, he invested billions in tax dollars to procure solar energy from companies like Solyndra.
Oh, wait!

Obama could provide leadership (stop laughing) to convince the Democrats in Congress, that energy is indeed necessary for a healthy economy and step out of the way of oil exploration and production in ANWR and the Gulf. Even an announcement of our intentions to drill would cause a sudden drop in the price of foreign oil, as OPEC nations would drop their prices to try to make it less profitable for increased competition to enter the marketplace.

I am all for preserving the pristine beauty of the Grand Canyon, but I believe that putting an additional million acres of land off limits to mining is overkill, and an overreach of this regime. The way to more energy independence is to drill and mine our natural resources and to purchase as much of the difference between what we produce and what we need from our trading partners and allies.

BTW, Mr. President? The idea that we are going to simultaneously put more and more Americans into electric cars while shutting down more and more power plants is insanity of the first order. If you see a "blueprint" that calls for the garbage disposal to be installed in the master bedroom and the toilet next to the kitchen sink, you might want to fire your architect.

*Small brain freeze the AM. Thinking "Romex", wrote "Nomex". That why you need details in your blueprints!

Governor Brewer invites Obama to visit the border with her. Obama thinks she said "Borders" and said, "No thanks! I haven't finished reading the book I've got!"

The unintended consequence of this conversation and the president huffing off afterwards, is the increased attention in Gov. Brewer's book:

Prior to the meeting, Brewer’s book was languishing in the annals of the millions of books sold by Amazon. It was sitting at 311,472 overall on Wednesday afternoon. By Thursday morning, the book had moved to number 14.

Apparently there's more than one Amazon in Arizona! Maybe next time, Barry should bring TOTUS with him to every informal meeting?

It was a tense moment on the tarmac.

President Obama, alighting from the stairs of Air Force One in Phoenix this afternoon, was greeted by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, who handed him an envelope and the two exchanged what appeared to be some heated sentiments. At one point, she pointed her finger at him.

Asked afterward what happened, Brewer said, “He was a little disturbed about my book, Scorpions for Breakfast.

“I said to him that I have all the respect in the world for the office of the president. The book is what the book is. I asked him if he read the book. He said he read the excerpt,” she said, according to a pool report. “He didn’t feel that I had treated him cordially. I said I was sorry he felt that way but I didn’t get my sentence finished. Anyway, we’re glad he’s here. I’ll regroup.”

In the envelope she had given him was a handwritten letter, Brewer said — “an invitation that I’ve extended to him before with regards to coming to Arizona and going to the border with me. . . . We’ve had a remarkable comeback here and I want to share that with him.”

A White House official confirmed the invitation and described the encounter in more bureaucratic terms: “The President said he’d be glad to meet with her again, but did note that after their last meeting, a cordial discussion in the Oval Office, the governor inaccurately described the meeting in her book. The President looks forward to continuing taking steps to help Arizona’s economy grow.”

The pool reporter, POLITICO’s Carrie Budoff Brown, said the scene was far from the norm. Aside from the pointing, they appeared to talk over each other and he appeared to walk away from her while they were still talking.

My clear takeaway from this story is that President Thin-Skin couldn't stand the fact that Governor Real Leader's book has a (passage?) that is slightly less-than-rosy toward Him. They met on the tarmac, sparks of discontent flew, God forbid.

But just what did Governor Brewer say in her book?

The Hill:

In the book, Brewer complains about one meeting at the White House with Obama -- centered around immigration and border security -- writing, “It was though President Obama thought he could lecture me, and I would learn at his knee.”
Initially, Brewer called the meeting “cordial.” But in the book, she walked back the sentiment, calling the president “patronizing.”

I get it: The gist of Governor Brewer's transgression in her book is that Obama is arrogant. "It was though he could lecture me, and I would learn at his knee." This is exactly what I have sensed about Obama since day one; that we are a nation of children begging to learn at his knee. It's the condescension and arrogance of this man that transcends ideology. For the life of me, I don't understand how anyone can watch this man and feel anything but queasiness in the stomach.

"Please, oh Obama, we are so unworthy of your wisdom, oh please! Enlighten us, oh we lowly peasants! Please, Professor-President!"

-- The expected chorus of children (and adults with no reasoning skills) across America.

This has me thinking: Just who found this inflammatory, unpleasant quote about Obama in Governor Brewer's book? How many resources were spent seeking this (and others) out? How many low-paid Plouffe trolls did it take to dig up one lowly little passage in a book? Isn't the Messiah above a passage in a small-state governor's book? How Orwellian is that?

I guess we should appreciate that Obama is increasing the sales of something other than anti-depressants in this country.

This sounds like a good read.

Captain James M. Sprayberry

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Capt. Sprayberry, Armor, U.S. Army, distinguished himself by exceptional bravery while serving as executive officer of Company D. His company commander and a great number of the men were wounded and separated from the main body of the company. A daylight attempt to rescue them was driven back by the well entrenched enemy's heavy fire. Capt. Sprayberry then organized and led a volunteer night patrol to eliminate the intervening enemy bunkers and to relieve the surrounded element. The patrol soon began receiving enemy machinegun fire. Capt. Sprayberry quickly moved the men to protective cover and without regard for his own safety, crawled within close range of the bunker from which the fire was coming. He silenced the machinegun with a hand grenade. Identifying several l-man enemy positions nearby, Capt. Sprayberry immediately attacked them with the rest of his grenades. He crawled back for more grenades and when 2 grenades were thrown at his men from a position to the front, Capt. Sprayberry, without hesitation, again exposed himself and charged the enemy-held bunker killing its occupants with a grenade. Placing 2 men to cover his advance, he crawled forward and neutralized 3 more bunkers with grenades. Immediately thereafter, Capt. Sprayberry was surprised by an enemy soldier who charged from a concealed position. He killed the soldier with his pistol and with continuing disregard for the danger neutralized another enemy emplacement. Capt. Sprayberry then established radio contact with the isolated men, directing them toward his position. When the 2 elements made contact he organized his men into litter parties to evacuate the wounded. As the evacuation was nearing completion, he observed an enemy machinegun position which he silenced with a grenade. Capt. Sprayberry returned to the rescue party, established security, and moved to friendly lines with the wounded. This rescue operation, which lasted approximately 71/2 hours, saved the lives of many of his fellow soldiers. Capt. Sprayberry personally killed 12 enemy soldiers, eliminated 2 machineguns, and destroyed numerous enemy bunkers. Capt. Sprayberry's indomitable spirit and gallant action at great personal risk to his life are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.

Capt. Sprayberry: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

On a night with the false reports of Joe Paterno's death, I am sad to announce the death of a fellow blogger, Gina Cobb. I never met her, but I always enjoyed reading her blog. Gina passed away peacefully on December 30th.

Just a reminder that none of us lives forever and no one is promised tomorrow. Love 'em while you've got 'em!

Barack Obama’s 2008 Iowa New Media Director was arrested Friday for attempting to use the identities of Secretary of State Matt Schultz, and/or his brother Thomas, with the intent to falsely implicate the Secretary Schultz in illegal or unethical behavior. Zach Edwards, 29, of Des Moines, currently works for Link Strategies, a Democrat-affiliated organization with ties to Iowa Senator Tom Harkin. Edwards is the Director of New Media for Link Strategies.

The Secretary of State’s office discovered the alleged crime and reported it to authorities. Edwards turned himself in to the Iowa DCI agents Friday afternoon. He was charged with identity theft, a misdemeanor, and booked into the Polk County jail. Edwards posted $2,000 bail and was released later on Friday. He faces up to two years in prison.

So, a former Obama staffer uses illegal or unethical behavior to try to smear a Republican with... charges of illegal or unethical behavior? Got it. Psychologists call that "Projection".

Mark Wahlberg claims he could have done what hundreds of other doomed passengers couldn't ... fought off the multiple 9/11 terrorists and saved one of the hijacked planes.

Wahlberg just gave an interview with Men's Journal ... in which he states, "If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn't have went down like it did. There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, 'OK, we're going to land somewhere safely, don't worry.'"

Ha! Apparently Mark Wahlberg is having a tough time separating fact from silver-screen fiction.

What is it about today's actors' bloated sense of importance, entitlement, omniscience and elitism?

Is it any wonder that the Hollywood Left has no problem forcing their socialist worldview on all of us?

Remember when President Obama wanted to spend a lot of money and tried to justify it by calling it a "jobs bill"? His mantra for passing the bill was "We can't wait!"

Now, after three years of studies and delays, Obama is asked to just get out of the way of a project that will create tens of thousands of jobs that not only will not cost the government any thing, in fact it will add to government coffers, and Obama says, "Okay. We can wait."

The Obama White House is trying to spin this to make the Republicans at fault for setting an arbitrary, political time line for the President. The fact is, this deal is on the verge of going away and not coming back, as Canada finds another customer for its oil.

Additionally, the White House is crying that those mean, nasty Republicans are trying to rush this project through without a chance to study the alternatives...only, there have been more than three years worth of studies on this pipeline.

This is such a no brainer that many of us are astounded that the Chucklehead-in-Chief is standing in the way of this. It creates real, good paying jobs at no expense to the taxpayer. At a time when Iran, on the threshold of becoming a nuclear power, is threatening to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, the pipeline would provide added energy security in the case of any stoppage of Middle Eastern oil. We would be giving oil revenues to one of our closest allies and trading partner instead of sending them to countries prone to funding terrorism.

It would provide good jobs, union jobs, revenue to the states, to the feds and to tens of thousands of citizens in the time of recession and Obama doesn't want to risk alienating his environmentalist wacko base before the election. Nice.

If there was ever any doubt that the Narcissist-in-Chief cares about anything other than himself, the fact that he is willing to put his own electoral success (and access to a private 747, lavish parties with movie stars, paid vacations and all the golf courses he can dream of) over the welfare and prosperity of the American people should disabuse anyone of that notion.

The Keystone Pipeline would be good for America. Obama is against it. You do the math!

Specialist Fifth Class Clarence Eugene Sasser

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sp5c. Sasser distinguished himself while assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion. He was serving as a medical aidman with Company A, 3d Battalion, on a reconnaissance in force operation. His company was making an air assault when suddenly it was taken under heavy small arms, recoilless rifle, machinegun and rocket fire from well fortified enemy positions on 3 sides of the landing zone. During the first few minutes, over 30 casualties were sustained. Without hesitation, Sp5c. Sasser ran across an open rice paddy through a hail of fire to assist the wounded. After helping 1 man to safety, was painfully wounded in the left shoulder by fragments of an exploding rocket. Refusing medical attention, he ran through a barrage of rocket and automatic weapons fire to aid casualties of the initial attack and, after giving them urgently needed treatment, continued to search for other wounded. Despite 2 additional wounds immobilizing his legs, he dragged himself through the mud toward another soldier 100 meters away. Although in agonizing pain and faint from loss of blood, Sp5c. Sasser reached the man, treated him, and proceeded on to encourage another group of soldiers to crawl 200 meters to relative safety. There he attended their wounds for 5 hours until they were evacuated. Sp5c. Sasser's extraordinary heroism is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.

Sp5c. Sasser: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

If I break into your house and trash it, and it costs you five thousand dollars to repair (and fumigate), how is that any different, morally, from someone who swindles or steals the same amount?

And if the "one percent" are evil for "tricking people" into mortgages they couldn't afford, and taking their money, then aren't the OWS thugs just as guilty for stealing someone else's wealth, too? (And I suspect whoever owned this house was NOT part of the 1%.)

Vandalism is a form of theft. Even if the home owner or business has insurance that would cover the vandalism, it still robs the owner of the cost of his deductible, plus the time and labor to make things right, and robs every one in the pool of insured who must pay the premiums to make this vandalism whole again.

IMHO, the homeowner should have pressed charges against these thugs. I would have loved to have heard the pony-tailed moron trying to justify his actions in a court of law.

No. Seriously. We really hardly knew you! In case you haven't heard, the little known Jon Huntsman is dropping out of the Republican primaries. A man who generated so little excitement that members of his of own campaign sometimes misspelled his name, Huntsman leaves the race with a whimper and not a bang.

As Obama's ambassador to China, he gained foreign policy experience and the hint, that maybe his policies were closer to Obama's than one might hope for in a Republican candidate for the Presidency.

He speaks Chinese, and seems more than a little proud of the fact, dropping Chinese phrases into speeches or conversations, like some obscure Firefly reference, but lacking its charm.
He comes across as perhaps being educated, but not necessarily wise.

His campaign never really caught fire. His leaving the race will remove a distraction from the business of selecting our eventual nominee.

It is rumored that he will endorse Romney. Look for that endorsement to garner just as much excitement as the rest of his candidacy.

Brees sacked on his own ten. Punt fielded by SF on the 30 - fifteen yard return.

49 yard pass - Niners score first blood. Seven -Zip, Niners.

Pressure on Brees - long pass intercepted by Niners mid field, returned inside the ten to the four yd. line.

Today was a red letter day! This morning, when my UPS guy dropped off a package for me, there was a complimentary calendar sitting under it! Now, it is already the 12th of January, but this was the first package he's delivered this year, so being a little late can be overlooked .

Sergeant Gordon R. Roberts

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sgt. Roberts distinguished himself while serving as a rifleman in Company B, during combat operations. Sgt. Roberts' platoon was maneuvering along a ridge to attack heavily fortified enemy bunker positions which had pinned down an adjoining friendly company. As the platoon approached the enemy positions, it was suddenly pinned down by heavy automatic weapons and grenade fire from camouflaged enemy fortifications atop the overlooking hill. Seeing his platoon immobilized and in danger of failing in its mission, Sgt. Roberts crawled rapidly toward the closest enemy bunker. With complete disregard for his safety, he leaped to his feet and charged the bunker, firing as he ran. Despite the intense enemy fire directed at him, Sgt. Roberts silenced the 2-man bunker. Without hesitation, Sgt. Roberts continued his l-man assault on a second bunker. As he neared the second bunker, a burst of enemy fire knocked his rifle from his hands. Sgt. Roberts picked up a rifle dropped by a comrade and continued his assault, silencing the bunker. He continued his charge against a third bunker and destroyed it with well-thrown hand grenades. Although Sgt. Roberts was now cut off from his platoon, he continued his assault against a fourth enemy emplacement. He fought through a heavy hail of fire to join elements of the adjoining company which had been pinned down by the enemy fire. Although continually exposed to hostile fire, he assisted in moving wounded personnel from exposed positions on the hilltop to an evacuation area before returning to his unit. By his gallant and selfless actions, Sgt. Roberts contributed directly to saving the lives of his comrades and served as an inspiration to his fellow soldiers in the defeat of the enemy force. Sgt. Roberts' extraordinary heroism in action at the risk of his life were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.

Sgt. Roberts: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

Well, something new, anyway! We did a story here last week about electric cars catching fire (Is it Karma if Al Gore's Electric Cars Cause Fires?). And we went out of our way to point out it was NOT the Chevy Volt.

And we're not talking about the car-b-que prone Chevy Volt here.

As Gilda Radner used to say: "Never mind!"

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- General Motors is recalling the Chevrolet Volt to make changes that it says will help prevent fires from coolant leaks which may follow a severe side impact.

"Coolant leak that could cause a fire"...where have I heard that before? Oh, yeah. The Karma.

The recall applies to all of the approximately 8,000 Volts on the road today. Dealers will also make changes on cars on their lots...

Eight thousand cars sold in two years? And every single one of them is being recalled. Only, GM isn't calling it a "recall". That has negative connotations to it, don'tcha know? But then, so does having your car catch fire!

GM will call it a "customer satisfaction campaign." Because most customers are more satisfied when their cars don't burst into flames! And since Government Motors is run in part by the Obama administration, expect a new marketing campaign:

Notice about twenty seconds in, he tells us that the military budget will slow, but will continue to grow. Why is it that when he is talking about slowing the rate of the general budget, but allowing it to grow, he speaks in terms of "spending cuts"?

To reduce our deficit, I've already signed nearly $1 trillion of spending cuts into law...

Which is it, Mr. President? A spending cut or merely slowing the rate of growth? Let me guess. "Spending cut" sounds better in an election year alongside "general budget" more than it does "military budget"?

Mr. President, you need more time to work on your golf game. I suggest we do something for you along those lines in November.

Captain Ronald E. Ray

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Capt. Ray distinguished himself while serving as a platoon leader with Company A. When 1 of his ambush patrols was attacked by an estimated reinforced Viet Cong company, Capt. Ray organized a reaction force and quickly moved through 2 kilometers of mountainous jungle terrain to the contact area. After breaking through the hostile lines to reach the beleaguered patrol, Capt. Ray began directing the reinforcement of the site. When an enemy position pinned down 3 of his men with a heavy volume of automatic weapons fire, he silenced the emplacement with a grenade and killed 4 Viet Cong with his rifle fire. As medics were moving a casualty toward a sheltered position, they began receiving intense hostile fire. While directing suppressive fire on the enemy position, Capt. Ray moved close enough to silence the enemy with a grenade. A few moments later Capt. Ray saw an enemy grenade land, unnoticed, near 2 of his men. Without hesitation or regard for his safety he dove between the grenade and the men, thus shielding them from the explosion while receiving wounds in his exposed feet and legs. He immediately sustained additional wounds in his legs from an enemy machinegun, but nevertheless he silenced the emplacement with another grenade. Although suffering great pain from his wounds, Capt. Ray continued to direct his men, providing the outstanding courage and leadership they vitally needed, and prevented their annihilation by successfully leading them from their surrounded position. Only after assuring that his platoon was no longer in immediate danger did he allow himself to be evacuated for medical treatment. By his gallantry at the risk of his life in the highest traditions of the military service, Capt. Ray has reflected great credit on himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.
