Scheidemünze

Scheidemünze: minor, fractional or token money. "Small change", you could call it. This has been a week of small change.

Nothing really big or important. At least nothing new. There was a lot of little stuff, flying under the radar, but nothing really jumped out. A couple of examples:

I was listening to conservative talk station KSFO, San Francisco, the night that Brian Sussman announced that Lee Rodgers was retiring and he would be taking over the morning show. He made it sound as if it was a voluntary move by Rodgers. It wasn’t.

In the days that followed, several articles came out that revealed that Rodgers had been unceremoniously dumped, without even the opportunity to bid his large and loyal audience goodbye. Some said it was because Rodgers refused to tone down his remarks about Muslims. However, the parent company of KSFO, Citadel Broadcasting, had filed for bankruptcy last December. After 25+ years in radio, Lee Rodgers was probably making pretty good money. That would have made him a pretty big target as well.

Now, Sussman is a good guy. I used to listen to his evening show quite frequently on my way home from work. But, I, like many others really liked Lee Rodgers. I will miss his irreverent and acerbic wit. Was he fired for political incorrectness or as an economy measure or both? I bookmarked several articles and mulled it over and nothing really coalesced.
Was Rodgers treated shabbily? Absolutely!
Does the radio station have the right to fire whomever they choose? Also true. Color me ambivalent.

Same thing with the B & B Do it Center story. Small time hardware store puts out coffee and doughnuts for their customers for years, now the Nanny State of California wants them to install stainless steel sinks and a “food preparation” area.

How many meetings have you attended where they served coffee and doughnuts that weren’t served from a “permitted” food preparation area? Insanity? Yes. Different from all the stories we've heard over the years of children's lemonade stands closed by bureaucrats for want of permits or food preparation issues? Not really. Nothing to see here! Move along!

So, small change for now. I'll see what kind of "interest" I can accrue by the weekend!
