Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: A Review, Sort Of

To quote Erick Erickson, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 — Very Funny, But the First Was Better". This week's banner, you may have noticed is Baby Groot, who, as a walking talking vegetable, may put kids off eating broccoli forever. "But, Mom! Baby Groot!!!!!"

The opening credits are worthy of watching twice. The focus is on Baby Groot rocking out to some tunes while the rest of the Guardians fight some humongous monster in the background. Like I said, you need to watch it at least twice.

Although one might enjoy this as a stand alone flick, do yourself a favor and see the original first if you haven't. There are many references to the first film and the relationship of the characters, and as we said, it's a better film.

There are a couple of cool cameos, at least one clever product placement for a fast food restaurant, in addition to the proverbial Walkman. The soundtrack, like the first film, is vintage rock. Special effects and makeup are great and Stan Lee shows up for his ubiquitous cameo as well.

The plot is the least of anybody's worries. The themes deal with familial relationships. The jokes are sometimes a bit crude, not to everybody's liking. I found the movie to be a pleasant afternoon romp. A good popcorn movie. Beware: there were so many trailers prior to the movie that by the time they ended, I'd forgotten which movie I'd come to see!

Lots of fun. Nothing august, nothing of fate. Weighty affairs will just have to wait!*

I'd give it four out of five stars.
