Justice, in order to be just, must be proportionate. We do not ask the death penalty for jaywalking (or being a pickpocket). That would be grossly disproportionate.
Some people smugly ask, "How can you be pro-life if you are pro-death penalty?" That's very simple. Ask them, "How can you be pro-freedom, if you believe in locking people up for their crimes?"
If someone kidnaps you, depriving you of your freedom, his punishment is to be deprived of his freedom. By the act of kidnapping you, kidnappers forfeit their own right to freedom.
Likewise, murderers forfeit their own right to life. That maintains the proportionality of justice.
