A labor of love started under the Clinton Administration, the restoration of Old Glory, first photographed in the Boston Navy Yard (above), was helped along with a $13 million contribution from designer Ralph Lauren.

...it is reasonable to say that with the possible exception of the White House, the Statue of Liberty and the Washington Monument, the Star-Spangled Banner – the mammoth American flag that in 1814 inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem that became the national anthem – may be this country's most precious icon of nationhood.

Frank Van Riper gives the history of the flag here.

The optimistic goal of the restoration project, was that the flag should last another 500 years. May the Republic for which she stands last that long!
Thank you, Mr. Lauren, for helping to preserve that which inspires us. Long may she wave.
