350 Pound "Baby" on the Public* Dole

Have you seen this story?

“Given that Mr. Thornton is able to determine what is appropriate attire and actions in public, drive himself to complete errands, design and custom-make baby furniture to support a 350-pound adult and run an Internet support group, it is possible that he has been improperly collecting disability benefits for a period of time,” Mr. Coburn wrote in a letter Monday to Inspector General Patrick P. O’Carroll Jr…

In an email response to The Washington Times, Mr. Thornton threatened to kill himself if his Social Security payments are taken away, and said the television episode showing him doing woodwork oversold his abilities.

“You wanna test how damn serious I am about leaving this world, screw with my check that pays for this apartment and food. Try it. See how serious I am. I don’t care,” the California man said. “I have no problem killing myself. Take away the last thing keeping me here, and see what happens. Next time you see me on the news, it will be me in a body bag.”…

Two suggestions: One, we leave him on the doorstep of a church and run. Maybe someone will adopt him?
Two, There's an old Biblical admonition about one not working and not eating. I don't wish to be crass, but I think his threats of suicide are mere posturing. I think as soon as the checks ran out and he got a little hungry, he might find woodworking more fulfilling than he does now while his every need is catered to!

If not, if he really is batsh*t crazy and a danger to himself, there are other institutions to take care of that.

BTW, I have some fetishes I wouldn't mind the state subsidizing!

*I originally used the word "State" in the headline, but in the sense of "the State", not "one of the states". "Public" is perhaps a bit less confusing. -ed.

Hat tips to Mrs. C. and Memeorandum

  1. Thanks for not posting a picture of this ;)

  2. Go ahead and take away his S.S. payments. If he carries out his "threat" perhaps the money (and oxygen he consumes) will go to someone that deserves it.

Working would interfere with his nap time. Exhibit A of why Social Security is going broke.

  4. BTW, don't buy into his line of crap about the wood working skills. Keep in mind having to move 50 board feet or so of lumber around. I dabble in woodworking as a hobby and usually buy 100+ bd. ft. at a time for the price break and not needing to waste time & gas chasing down another board when I come up short. I'm in no way handycapped, although some believe I might be so mentally, but unloading 50 bd. ft. of wood into storage will leave you winded. unloading 150 bd. ft. makes you winded and thirsty!

***shameless plug*** Want a nice coffee & end table set or other furniture item made of imported exotics then talk to me, I have access to SOME exotics at incredibly low prices & custom build at reasonable rates since it's a hobby as opposed to a living!

  5. LCR: People are reading this around the world, day and night. Figured some folk might be eating.

    Spart: Works for me!

Mrs. C: Work interferes with my nap time, too! You don't see me going on disability!

Spart: I consider Angelina Jolie to be exotic with a custom build. See what you can do about the low price!

  6. Spart: I consider Angelina Jolie to be exotic with a custom build. See what you can do about the low price!
I could build 1 lamp using 1 leg like in that Christmas movie, maybe on the cheap if I get to keep the leftovers!

  7. Spart: I'm going to need more than just a leg.
On second thought, money's no object!
