Actually, I think it was more like a decade than a century. In 1963 when my sister was in high school, Latin was a required class. A few years later when my brother was in HS, it was an elective, and by the time I got to high school, I don't believe they even offered it as an elective. When I started college in 1969, everybody either had to take or test out of a "bonehead" English class, because too many students were not sufficiently literate in English.
