Vintage Babe of the Week

Tonight's Vintage Babe* is Claudine Longet!

(*a.k.a. Rule Five)

This Day in History 1775

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April’s breeze unfurled,
Here once the embattled farmers stood
And fired the shot heard round the world.

The Old North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts, was the site of the first real skirmish of the American Revolution. Earlier on the morning of April 19, 1775, British soldiers opened fire on a company of militia down the road in Lexington, but that hardly qualifies as a skirmish. The colonial militia at Lexington didn’t intend on fighting the redcoats, who outnumbered them about 700 to 80, and were better equipped and better trained. The famous “shot heard round the world,” is still a bit of a mystery, as to who fired on whom. Tensions were so high however, that upon hearing the shot, the British fired into the colonists, a few returned fire, the British charged and wisely, the colonists ran, leaving eight of their own dead and ten wounded on the field.

Former Top Cop Considers Presidential Run

"Eric Holder, I think, is a far Left candidate that will not be welcomed by a majority of the country."
-Katie Pavich

Not the first time speculation of his presidential run has been floated. Holder was the only US Attorney General in the history of the Republic to be held in both civil and criminal contempt during his time in office. He was Barack Obama's partner in crime, in decimating race relations during his tenure, opposing voter ID laws, fostering citizens' rights for enemy combatant terrorists and blundering in his disastrous attempt to foment new restrictions on the Second Amendment, with his ill fated Fast and Furious gun running scheme. That said, he may be the best that Democrats can offer!

Specialist Fourth Class Frank A. Herda

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sp4c. Herda (then Pfc.) distinguished himself while serving as a grenadier with Company A. Company A was part of a battalion-size night defensive perimeter when a large enemy force initiated an attack on the friendly units.
While other enemy elements provided diversionary fire and indirect weapons fire to the west, a sapper force of approximately 30 men armed with hand grenades and small charges attacked Company A's perimeter from the east. As the sappers were making a last, violent assault, 5 of them charged the position defended by Sp4c. Herda and 2 comrades, 1 of whom was wounded and lay helpless in the bottom of the foxhole.
Sp4c. Herda fired at the aggressors until they were within 10 feet of his position and 1 of their grenades landed in the foxhole. He fired 1 last round from his grenade launcher, hitting 1 of the enemy soldiers in the head, and then, with no concern for his safety, Sp4c. Herda immediately covered the blast of the grenade with his body.
The explosion wounded him grievously, but his selfless action prevented his 2 comrades from being seriously injured or killed and enabled the remaining defender to kill the other sappers. By his gallantry at the risk of his life in the highest traditions of the military service, Sp4c. Herda has reflected great credit on himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.

Specialist Herda: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

Hat tip Home of Heroes

There are seventy five living MoH recipients today. Their names and their stories should not be forgotten. My mission is to honor one of those heroes here each week, and salute them for their courage and sacrifice. In the words of John Fitzgerald Kennedy:

“A nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces, but also by the men it honors; the men it remembers.”

Quote du jour

Recently, London's murder rate caught up with New York City's. Which is weird, because there shouldn't be any murders in either city. After all, both NYC and the UK have very strict gun laws. As we've learned from our moral, ethical, and intellectual betters on the left, banning guns leads to fewer gun crimes.

Logic is not David Hogg's Long Suit

"Gun violence can happen anywhere at anytime." As Artie Johnson might have said, "Verrrrry interesting!" Wasn't his whole shtick, his and the Cuban-dictator-loving teeny boppers he hung out with, that "We don't feel safe in schools anymore!" ? "We're afraid to go back to class until this 'gun violence' threat is addressed!" And now, young Hogg is telling us that he is every bit as safe in class, on those rare occasions he actually attends, as he is in his bedroom playing video games. Badly.

More accurately, he is at no higher risk in class than he is everywhere else. Statistically (I know, David! Math is hard!) at lower risk than he would be anywhere else. School shootings are rare. Unlike the poor tormented lad David's friends bullied, most people, even hardened criminals, are averse to shooting children.

The anti-gunners are fond of quoting national statistic on 'gun violence', yet most of it takes place in large cities under Democrat leadership. Most of them with stringent gun control laws. Criminals do not faithfully obey the law. One of the things that makes even a 'routine' traffic stop so potentially dangerous, is that the criminal illegally carrying an illegal gun is more likely to ignore laws about current registration and functional taillights, too. The police officer who pulled you over for an outdated tag has no idea how many laws you've already broken or are prepared to break.

Since the illustrious Mr. Hogg has admitted that he is no less safe in school as he is "anywhere" else, I propose he should go back to class. Once he graduates, he should find a community college, where he will undoubtedly be placed in a 'bonehead' English course. This is not a cheap shot. Colleges have known for years that high schools are doing a micturating poor job of teaching English that will serve them in a college level educational environment. Mr. Hogg is no exception.

After a year or two of junior college, he may find himself better equipped to successfully apply to an institute of higher learning. Then, maybe he might take a course in logic.
