So Long, Arlen! Don't Let the Door Hit Your Fanny on the Way Out!

Arlen Specter, RINO extraordinaire, has jumped ship, switched sides, and joined the Democrat Party. We know that it was a principled move, based on the fact that just five weeks ago, he said he'd never switch. Then, it became apparent he was going to lose the next Republican primary to retain his seat, so he changed parties (probably with the promise of some Dem party and union contributions to his next campaign, in exchange for a flip flop on card check, perhaps??)

Few conservatives will mourn his passing. Party loyalty helped Specter fend off a challenge from conservative Pat Toomey in the last election. Arlen shows his lack of class by totally abandoning his party in what will probably be a vain attempt to hold onto power.

Any one who wants to paint this as leading to the demise of the party is dipping into the realm of wishful thinking. Getting the liberal to moderate Specter out of the party will open a spot for a genuine conservative and another step back in the right direction for the party. This move will ultimately strengthen conservatism, not signal its demise.

Oh, and for those of you worried about my health, I did roll my eyes when I heard White House press secretary Robert Gibbs describe Specter's reasons for becoming a Democrat!
