50 Years Ago Today: Roger Maris Hits Home Run #61

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

October, 1st, 1961, Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's home run record for a single season. The Babe's record had stood unbroken for 37 seasons.

Back before anyone ever heard of Sammy Sosa or Mark McGwire , there was Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris, powerhouse players for the New York Yankees.

I was a kid in 1961, and baseball was life. There were no player walkouts or strikes and one could at least pretend these guys played for the love of the game.

Those delusions and many more like them died a long time ago. But, fifty years ago today, Roger Maris made baseball history. Asterisk or no, it's still an accomplishment worth celebrating.
