What Hath Philo Wrought?

Electronic television was first successfully demonstrated in San Francisco on Sept. 7, 1927. The system was designed by Philo Taylor Farnsworth, a 21-year-old inventor who had lived in a house without electricity until he was 14.

The first television I remember my family having was similar to the one in the picture. As I recall it was a blond wood, with wooden doors you could close in front of the screen, so it would look more like a piece of furniture when it wasn't in use.

Golden Oldie: Liberals Who Vote, Like Trump. Liberals Who Don't Vote, Like "Cops"

Remember that old saying "You are what you eat"? Maybe today it's also true that you are what you watch? National Media Inc. did a demographic study of who watches what on TV, based on their party affiliation and tendency to vote.

Surprise, surprise when I saw a number of my favorites in the upper right hand, Republican who vote quadrant! Celebrity Apprentice, on the other hand, with The Donald, was the show deemed most popular among the most liberal in the audience. Never seen it myself! "Wive Swap", which, in the spirit of full disclosure I have also not seen, was popular with the most liberal in the audience that tends not to vote.

Curious, I thought, was the presence of "Cops" in the more liberal less vote crowd. Isn't this show on (whispers) Fox*? Maybe among liberals who sit home on election day, there is also a fascination with seeing themselves, their friends and their neighbors on TV??

One other surprise was "House". I like the show and would have thought it would have skewed more right, but then, the show did lose some conservative viewers after Lisa Edelstein did that pro-abortion PSA.

I could show you that, but instead, I'll show you one of the reasons some of us still watch, in spite of that:

*Sometimes called "Pox" by those who love it, watch it every day, but are embarrassed to admit it in front of fellow liberals.

Update: Democrat voters watch measurably more television than Republican and swing voters. According to National Media Research

Family Guy Crosses the Line?

Caution: Adult content and insensitive, tasteless attempt at humor:

I hesitated in posting this. One, because I hate to give these guys any more publicity, two because it is utterly tasteless, and three, because it's been bugging me a long time and it took me this long to do something about it.

I wrote the following letter to a local TV station. It was long overdue.

To whom it may concern:

I would like this letter to be entered into your public file. It concerns your airing of the program “Family Guy” at 4:30 PM on weekdays.
You run a disclaimer before the show, but since it airs in a time slot where children are out of school and many parents are still at work, I do not believe that a mere disclaimer is sufficient to keep the adult and often inappropriate content away from young, impressionable minds.

You acknowledge by the disclaimer that this is intended for mature audiences, but air it in an "after school" time slot. I would not presume to censor the show in any way, but the time slot the syndicated show airs is inappropriate for children and thus does not serve the needs of the community.

Please move this program to a more appropriate time slot, should you decide to continue airing it. Thank you.

It was addressed to the station, and signed, delivered by snail mail.

If anyone wants to complain about a similar situation, tell the station you want your comment to go into their public file.

Station license holders must demonstrate that they are providing programming in the best interests of their community, in order to keep their license. Any negative information in the public file is perceived as a threat to their livelihood. For that reason, a letter addressed to their public file will have more impact than say, a call to their switchboard. I was once told that if you wanted to put the Fear of God into any radio or TV station, all you had to do was walk in during business hours and ask to see the public file.

Family Guy is funny at times, offensive at others and gross most of the time. Any adult who wants to watch it should be able to. But, trusting a latchkey kid to police himself and not watch it? Why not leave your liquor cabinet unlocked with your car keys on top of it sometime?

Why You Never Want to Watch TV or Movies With Me

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

It’s the little things that bug me! I was watching TV this weekend. More than usual. I’ve been doing a little remodeling, and after downing 600mg. of generic Ibuprofen, I settled down to listen to my bones calcify and turn on the TV. And, IMHO, there’s nothing on. At least nothing that I might really enjoy watching. But, my kids and I have this rating system, and one of the ratings is “A movie I would watch only if I were in a full body cast and couldn’t reach the remote”. This one may qualify…

I’d never seen Robocop III. I liked Robocop, but the sequel, II, was pretty bad. I wasn’t even aware that they’d made a third one. Peter Weller was missing from the cast. I thought the fact that he had to go through pretty much the entire first movie with just his mouth and jaw showing to convey emotion was pretty cool.

Anyway, they get some Peter Weller lookalike to reprise the role. Plot spoiler alert: Towards the end of the movie, he flies. That’s different. But, unfortunately, the point in the movie that really caught my attention was a couple of boneheaded mistakes by the writers/director. According to the story, Robocop is more machine than man. He is heavily armored to withstand bullets, mortars and rocket fire. At one point in the movie, he is doused with gasoline and set on fire. Why this didn’t burn his unarmored face off, I’m really not quite sure! (See what I mean?)

Then Robocop is down in some sewer helping his friends escape the evil bad guys, and he’s running out of energy. He collapses. Great! How are they going to get this heavily armored piece of machinery out of there? He must weigh a ton! No problem! Two guys, a woman and a little girl pick him up and carry him into an adjoining space. Actually, the little girl was more hanging on him than carrying him. Now, that might work if Robocop was merely an actor in a plastic costume, but these people didn’t even pretend to break a sweat. There went what little suspension of disbelief there was for me!

And then, there was this episode of Law and Order (I think). I stopped watching L&O when it became more of a platform for every liberal cause célèbre than for entertainment. At the beginning of the episode, we see a body. Some SYT (sweet young thing) lies on the floor and pretends to be dead. No big deal. SYTs do it all the time looking for their big show biz break! Now, I’m not sure if this particular SYT fell asleep while waiting for her close up, but you can see this twitching around her eyelids. A second close up confirmed that this corpse definitely had Rapid Eye Movement! What was she thinking?

I must confess, that spotting continuity glitches and the like are sometimes more entertaining than the shows themselves. I saw one movie where the bad guy holding and firing a gun was alternately holding a revolver or a semiautomatic pistol from one moment to the next. I like looking for car chases where a car loses a hubcap or a side mirror which miraculously reattaches itself in the next shot. Or the good guy that takes a bullet through the thigh or shoulder who is sprinting and wrestling the bad guy mere hours later. And whenever I see a scene where a car is making or about to make some dramatic turn, I look to see if there are already skid marks on the street where it was done in earlier takes or rehearsal. This also works in Westerns, where if you can sometimes see wagon tracks or hoof prints where supposedly no one had gone before.

In that respect, my TV viewing did not disappoint me, and full disclosure, I generally multitask, watching the TV next to my computer, so my time is not entirely wasted. Well, on TV anyway!

Fox #1 Network - First time Since Inception

That's not the sound of fireworks you hear over at Fox...it's the sound of liberal heads exploding! Heh.
NEW YORK (AP) - With a strong finishing kick from "American Idol," Fox captured the distinction of America's most popular television network for the first time since it began operation in 1987.

Fox took that title from CBS. It was the only major broadcast network with more prime-time viewers than the previous season, a distinction helped by its telecast of the Super Bowl. Fox didn't show television's biggest event during the 2006-7 season.
...CBS was second with 10.5 million viewers. It had the sharpest drop among the big broadcast networks, at 16 percent. Analysts said CBS was particularly hurt by the television writers strike, when it relied heavily on reruns that didn't do as strongly in the ratings as the network anticipated.

ABC was third with 10 million viewers (down 7 percent) and NBC finished fourth with 8.9 million (down 9 percent). The troubled CW network was down 19 percent, with 2.6 million viewers...
