"U.S. Flag 'Primes' Voters Toward Republican Viewpoints"

Rush reminded me of this this AM:

Just a glimpse at the American flag can sway voters, even Democrats, toward more Republican voting behavior, attitudes and beliefs, a new two-year study says.

The authors, from the University of Chicago, Cornell University and Hebrew University, say the research proves the American flag has a powerful effect on voters.

"A single exposure to an American flag resulted in a significant increase in participants' Republican voting intentions, voting behavior, political beliefs, and implicit and explicit attitudes, with some effects lasting eight months," reads the study titled, "Long-Term Effects of U.S. Flag Exposure on Republicanism."

Can't say for certain that it's true, but it never hurts to display the symbol of our great country on every suitable occasion.

I've placed a small flag at the top of the sidebar. Let's turn the Internet red white and blue between now and 2012 November.

Colin Kaepernick: You Have the Right to Remain Silent

A couple last points on the Kaepernick Kerfluffle before we relegate him and the NFL to the status of Hula Hoops, Lawn Darts and Pet Rocks in the ash heap of faddish entertainment.

For starters, it seems as though the knee jerk reaction of most of Kaepernick's defenders, was to make the straw man argument that he has the right of free speech in this country. This is most notable as an argument in search of a problem, since I have seen no one saying he did not. Examining his Seat Splinter Spectacular as a free speech issue, we note in passing the words of my dear sainted mother:
"There's a time and a place for everything!"
Location, location, location

We'll start with the old bromide about crowded theaters. You can't yell "Fire!" there. Well, actually you can, there are just certain consequences attached to it. If you falsely yell "Fire!" and someone is trampled to death in a stampede for the exits, you may spend the rest of your life shouting whatever you want in the Gray Bar Hotel. Or, you could go home, lock yourself in a bathroom and yell "Fire!" as much as you like, so long as it doesn't bother the neighbors, or the people you live with don't have you committed. (Admit It, Dude! That's pretty crazy!) Maybe you could try going into a crowded theater and shouting something innocuous like "Snickerdoodle!"? It won't get you arrested, but an usher may escort you from the building.

What have we learned so far? Yelling "Fire!" in your bathroom = free speech, in a theater = no free speech, and yelling anything at all in a theater could bring about unpleasant consequences.

Now if I felt really strong about this, I might take a couple of my redneck friends, we'll call them "Cletus" and "Chauncey", (we kinda have to, because those are their names!), and we'll wave signs and shout and stage a protest on the sidewalk in front of Kaepernick's house. Sidewalk protest = free speech. But then, if we take a walk up the driveway and say the exact same things, waving the same signs on his front porch...that's criminal trespass. Not free speech.

Speaking of "waves" if you do the wave in Arrowhead Stadium, you might get on the Jumbotron. If you try to start the wave at your local Presbyterian church, you may be in for a rude awakening. (But at least they'll pray for your soul!)

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient

You have any number of times where you have the freedom to speak, but probably shouldn't.  You are free to walk into any biker bar in America and insult the biggest dude in the place and then insult his bike and his old lady... once! Once the police come to investigate your disappearance, the biker is free to tell them he beat you to a bloody pulp and buried you in the desert...but he probably won't.* (See headline) You see there's a principle involved: Just because you can doesn't mean you should.  You also have the right to tell your boss what you think of his ideas and if your wife or girlfriend "looks fat" in that dress.

Discretion is the better part of valor

Consider the National Socialist Party of America, when they wanted to march through Skokie, Illinois, wearing their swastikas, marching through a village where one in six residents was either a Holocaust survivor or related to one. They, too had a constitutional right to free speech, but where they chose to exercise it was in incredibly poor taste.Ultimately, they ended up marching through Chicago instead. In retrospect, it's lucky they weren't shot.**

Or that group that claims to be a church that protests at the funerals of soldiers, holding signs that say things like "Thank God for dead soldiers". Would President Obama say that they are "starting a dialogue"? Does anyone dispute that they have the right to free speech in America, even though most good people find them and their practices repugnant?

Finally, a note on the character of what constitutes "speech". Personally, I disagree with the proposition that burning a flag is "speech". Speech consists of what you say, or what you write. Leaving aside the utter hypocrisy of those who say that global warming constitutes the biggest threat to the planet, yet see no problem in setting a cotton or polyester flag (or in extreme cases, SUVs) on fire, burning the flag is an action, an activity. I also believe that if we can redefine activity as speech, then the guy who punches the face of the person burning the flag is also "making a statement". But, I digress...

San Francisco, the football home of Colin Kaepernick, voted narrowly to ban public nudity a few years back, but many there and elsewhere across the country view nudity as a form of "free speech". My question for the NFL is:  If Mr. Kaepernick, or any of the other esteemed legal scholars which constitute NFL teams, decides to flip off the flag, burn the flag or drop trou and 'moon' the flag: Will that be a bridge too far? Maybe you could put together and focus group and see if that will stop the hemorrhaging of fans? Or not.

**Note to Tim Kaine: I am not inciting violence here, either, merely making note of the high numbers of shootings and firearm related deaths in the liberal Utopia of Chicago.

"Lil Wayne" Transforms into "Lil Whine"

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Poor baby! Rapper "Lil Wayne" shot a video over the weekend which depicted the American flag dropping to the ground and "Lil Dick", er, "Wayne" then proceeds to step on the flag. Hard to characterize what he did as "dancing", unless it was the St. Vitus variety.
“My country 'his of thee / Sweet land of kill 'em all and let 'em die / God bless Amerika / This ole' godless Amerika.”

Ah! Just a little Valentine to the country that made him prosperous and gave him the opportunity to become wealthy! An ode to the land that made him prosperous! No harm, no foul! Only someone beyond the pretentious and pseudo-anarchist youths that listen to and buy his music got wind of his little Bill Ayers style flag dance.

When he started to catch some flak for it, he backpedaled as fast as he could.
“It was never my intention to desecrate the flag of the United States of America. I was shooting a video for a song off my album entitled 'God Bless Amerika'. The clip that surfaced on the Internet was a camera trick clip that revealed that behind the American Flag was the Hoods of America," he said. "In the final edit of the video you will see the flag fall to reveal what is behind it but will never see it on the ground."

So, it's not disrespectful to drop the flag on the ground just so long as you edit it out of the video? What, there's no gravity on the part of the planet where you live, that you couldn't figure out that if the flag dropped, that it would hit the ground? Did you expect flying unicorns to bear it away while you obliviously continued your vulgar and pathetic rants? And those shots that show you looking down at your feet, while you're stepping on the flag, that didn't bother you enough to stop and make take a second take? Or couldn't you be bothered with that?

And, now, pathetic crapweasel that you are, you aren't man enough to stand behind your anti-American sentiments, are you? You tweet:
"I didn't step on the flag on purpose! It's a scene in a video where the flag drops behind me and after it drop it's just there as I perform."

I suppose you didn't make the video on purpose? The cameras and microphones just dropped in front of you while you were rapping? Just as plausible, Lil Whine.

That's okay, Lil Whine! We won't stop buying your music on purpose. At least I won't. I was ahead of the curve. I stopped buying it before I started.

Happy Flag Day!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Quote du jour

I believe our flag is more than just cloth and ink. It is a universally recognized symbol that stands for liberty, and freedom. It is the history of our nation, and it's marked by the blood of those who died defending it.

Flag of the Obama Nation Flies Again!

This time, in Florida, at the Lake County Democratic Headquarters in Tavares.
President Obama's face in place of stars on an American flag flying at Lake County Democratic Headquarters in Tavares irked a group of veterans on Tuesday, who found themselves engaged in a verbal confrontation and the threat of police action when they requested the flag be taken down. The matter was resolved peacefully when Democratic party officials removed the flag. The Obama flag had been flowing for two months underneath an American flag before it was noticed by the veterans, who argued that it was a desecration of the flag and in violation of three codes passed by Congress about displaying the American flag
Just to make it perfectly clear, the "threat of police action" was a threat against the veterans by the local Democrat party hacks.
Van Beck gave Hurlbert a POW-MIA flag to be installed in place of the Obama flag and offered for the veterans to put it up. Once again Hurlbert reminded Van Beck that he and the other veterans were on private property and if they touched the flag, she would call police.
Hmm. She wasn't calling it a "flag like banner". Of course, ever since I posted the picture of the guy (of indeterminate race) flying the Flag of the Obama Nation over his house, the peanut gallery of troll-like liberals have been strangely silent on the matter. Another account had this to say:
Tempers are flaring over a version of the American flag flying in Lake County. A veterans group says the flag is an outrage. The flag, which features a picture of President Obama, was taken down Tuesday afternoon. Korean war veteran Don Van Beck said his blood was boiling. "I can't describe how upset I was because you just don't do that to the American flag," Van Beck said.
The vets are calling it a desecration of the flag. And both parties refer to the object in question as a "flag". No one is using weasel words to try to slither away from the real issues. Speaking of "real", I'm getting a real sense of Déjà vu. You can read more on this here, here and here. Cross posted at Say Anything

Death Threats Over Denair Flag Incident?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

DENAIR, Calif. -- A Denair Unified School District employee reported receiving death threats following national media coverage of a recent American flag ban story.

The employee did not wish to be identified but said ever since the school district made national news because of the recent flag flap, teachers and school administrators have been threatened.

"From the teachers, I know they are taking precautions," the employee said. "I know police have been involved. They are doing safety measures."

KCRA 3 was the first to break the story on 13-year-old Cody Alicea who was told last week that he couldn't fly an American flag on the back of his bicycle while on school grounds because of what school officials called "safety concerns" of racial tension created on Cinco de Mayo.

There is obviously no place for death threats in civil discourse. Excuse my cynicism, but if indeed these threats took place, I would not automatically assign them to any particular ideology. Unbalanced people and liars come in all varieties. I will reserve judgment until there is evidence to corroborate the claims.

On the Denair Flag Controversy

Nothing like "Old Glory" to prime the pump of discussions over what it means to be an American. I've been keeping my powder dry over this latest controversy in Denair, California, over whether or not Cody Alicea could fly the American flag on his bicycle on school grounds.
Just last May, you might recall, California students were sent home for wearing American flag t-shirts on Cinco de Mayo. This seemed to be just more of the same.

First of all, for those of you contemplating home schooling, go with your gut. A lot of indoctrination takes place in lieu of actual learning in government schools. That a 13-year-old boy would be more cognizant of his Constitutional rights than the educational establishment where he is putatively going to be educated is a sad state of affairs.

If the sight of the American flag is going to "cause trouble", then why not deal with the trouble makers? Has appeasement taken such a foothold in our public institutions that we are no longer able to take a stand and say, "This is what we believe. If that offends you, too bad"?

People who are proud of their ethnic heritage should be free to do so, but their freedom does not trump the freedom of others in the process. I sometimes like to call myself a Native American. I was born here. I have that right. My flag is the American flag. It is a part of my ethnic heritage and that of my children.

If the school district wants to ban students from bringing any other flag onto campus, be it Gadsden or Mexican, I don't have a problem with that. But the one they themselves display prominently in front of the school, that was once displayed prominently in every classroom, and allegiance pledged to it on a daily basis, should be exempt from any arbitrary rules as long as this nation stands.

If anyone abuses the flag, then deal with the abuse. Did you notice in the video the care with which he correctly folded his flag? If not, go back and watch it again.

Cody Alicea and others like him, are the hope for the future of our country. The Neville Chamberlain wing of the educational establishment needs to learn that.

BTW, according to a report on KTXL last night, the school district is saying that this was a "misunderstanding". I'll say!

Time for a Little Political and Social Jiu Jitsu

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Jiu Jitsu has been described as a method of using one's opponent's strength against him. And if there's one thing we know about liberals, it's that they very strongly hate cigarettes!

If burning the flag in public is protected free speech saying "I hate this country", why wouldn't burning a small tube of tobacco, wrapped in paper be protected free speech saying "I like tobacco"? They both produce toxic fumes and smoke. Why is one protected and the other not?

I have never been of the opinion that burning a flag was "free speech". And even if that particular action could be denoted as speech, it would have to fall under the category of "fighting words".

Under protected free speech, you may say that you hate this country and that you despise our flag. We get that. Once you cross the line to take the literally inflammatory action of setting Old Glory on fire in public, it goes beyond mere speech, IMHO.

But, if you can't lick 'em, join 'em! I will concede that burning the flag in public is free speech if liberals concede that burning cigarettes in public is free speech.

Full disclosure: I am not a smoker, nor have I ever smoked. My dad passed away from heart failure and emphysema brought about by a two pack a day habit. I think it is a filthy practice and one I encourage people walk away from, if nothing else, for the sake of their loved ones. But if people can burn flags and call it "speech" why discriminate against tobacco, just because the one doing the burning has something different to say?

In that case, what would we do about all those laws prohibiting the "free speech" of smokers in public buildings, hmm? You can't have it both ways!

The Flag of the Obama Nation, Now With Pledge

Last October, in the The Flag of the Obama Nation Redux, we took a look at what one Obamanite was flying over his house:
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I was thinking of this in regards to the small furor of some boys being sent home from high school for having the audacity to wear t-shirts with American flags on them to school. Did I mention that they did so on that most sacred of American holidays: Cinco de Mayo?

Now aside from the fact that CdM is a bigger holiday north of the border than south (CdM is to Corona and Dos Equis what Mother's Day is to Hallmark!), shouldn't Americans have the right to express their patriotism 356 days a year? (366 on leap years?)

Cinco de Mayo is not an official holiday, nor is it an American holiday. It's a little like St. Patrick's Day, you celebrate it if you feel like it. Even Columbus day is a recognized American holiday, though it is fast falling out of favor because of "political correctness". All three have an ethnic and cultural aspect to them. I would be equally offended if someone asked me not to wear a representation of the American flag on any of those occasions.

I guess to many liberals, patriotism is to be celebrated once a year, on the Fourth of July, and then, only grudgingly. They quote from the Flag Code copiously when it comes to boys in patriotic t-shirts, but can't find it in themselves to criticize Obama's picture on the flag.

Since some of his followers have replaced the fifty stars representing our fifty (not fifty seven) states with the One True Star, Obama, I have rewritten the Pledge just for them:

I pledge allegiance to the flag
of the United State of Obama
and to the republic, which no longer stands.
One nation, over taxed, divided among racial, ethnic and economic quotas
With health care and government cheese for all.

(The proper way to give the new Pledge, incidentally, is with one's hand over one's crotch.)
