What a Great and Terrible Idea!

I saw this in an advertising email, and I thought to myself, "Wow! what a terrible idea. Or maybe a great one?" Terrible for police departments. In a holster, this would feel to your hand very much like your service weapon. I have read too many accounts of officers who meant to tase a subject, reaching for, drawing and mistaking their service weapon for their taser.
For a Rent-a-cop? This might be more than ideal. Holstered, it would look from a distance as if the security guard was armed with deadly force, the orange part concealed by the holster. That could provide additional deterrence because of the uncertainty in the potential offender's mind. And, if wrestled away from him, the guard would not be subjected to deadly force.

So let the buyer beware. If you are a civilian, open carrying this and so much as rest your hand on it, an armed peace officer might think he was being confronted with a deadly weapon. Paul Blart, Mall Cop? Knock yourself out! Police departments? Do. Not. Touch. When the adrenaline starts pumping in a dicey situation, you don't want your officers hesidtating or making any mistakes.

Let's be careful out there!

Gun Stuff/Marketing Stuff

I bought an inexpensive laser sight on Amazon for a pistol of mine. It was around fifteen bucks, so I thought, "Why not give it a try?" Since then, I've seen the same laser sight offered in two different places. One offers to send it to me for "free" w/ $14.95 shipping & handling.
Wow! Such a deal! Today, I saw one even better. They advertised "41% off". You click over to the site and the price is $29.95.
I didn't hang around long enough to see if there was shipping on top of that.

Caveat emptor!

Speaking of marketing, my late, ex father-in-law was a salesman for Montgomery Ward. Since he is deceased and the company is defunct, I don't think I'm 'talking out of school' here. He told me that MW would advertise goods, refrigerators, stoves, etc, in their catalog for greatly inflated prices. The catalog price would establish the "retail price", and then, after so many months, required by law, they would advertise the same merchandise in their store at a substantial "discount", only it wasn't a real discount, it was a reduction to what the normal retail price would have been, but because it was "on sale" at a greatly reduced price, i.e. full price, sales would increase. And pity the poor slob who actually ordered one through the catalog!

It pays to know your prices before you shop for anything: groceries, shoes, clothing, guns, screwdrivers, etc. Don't trust "sale" or "reduced prices" unless you've done some comparison shopping.

An informed shopper is a wise shopper.

As Long as the Government is Protecting Steel and Aluminum...

Comment on Gun Grabbers: Hey, Let’s Go After The Companies That Manufacture Guns

Interestingly, the president today signed a tariff act on both steel and aluminum, partially for strategic reasons, lest we cannot provide the raw materials for our own defense. Wouldn't this also apply to the gun industry? Here's an industry with manufacturing facilities, R & D to refine, improve and develop new personal weapons. Rather than penalize gun manufacturers, perhaps in addition to purchasing their products, the government should be subsidizing them in the form of tax breaks?

You Can Never Be Too Rich, Too Thin, or Have Too Much Ammunition

You may have noticed the badge on the sidebar for Ammo.com, because, you can never be too rich, too thin or have too much ammunition! They have started a refer a friend program:

"Get a $10 credit when a friend buys $200+ worth of ammo. Best of all, they'll save $15 on their first purchase as well!"

If you need to stock up on ammunition (and you probably should! ) take a look over there. No obligation. Check out their prices. If their deals are the best around, take advantage of them. And with all the money you save, as that guy in the commercial says, "You should probably buy me dinner!"

Click on the badge on the sidebar or go here.

Good hunting. And let's be careful out there!

Kevin Harvick Wins First NASCAR Pole Award

Kevin Harvick with unidentified object

I don't spend a lot of time on the sports page. MLB lost me with the strikes. The NFL went SJW and left me behind, so I usually don't give the sports section more than a cursory glance. But something caught my eye yesterday: A NASCAR driver proudly holding a rifle.

This had possibilities!

But I checked several stories, mostly All Pablum, which never got around to telling us exactly what he'd won. Tupperware? A doorstop?? A year's supply of tofu burgers???

Just an educated guess on my part, but it looks a little like a lever action carbine. (Gun, to the uninitiated).
Can't tell the caliber, but it looks like it might be tricked out a bit with some badges, maybe some special engraving. Would have been nice to acknowledge the gunmaker with at least a mention of his name. With the myriad of sponsors' logos on his jacket, NASCAR does not seem averse to capitalism.

Must be an AP thing?

On "Powerful" "Assault" Weapons

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The AR-15 and like weapons fire the .223 caliber round, sometimes referred to as the NATO round. It is erroneously described as "powerful", but is much smaller and lighter than the 30-06 round our fathers fired from their Springfield rifles in WWII. The doctrine behind the NATO round is that wounding a soldier is more effective than killing him out right. You kill one soldier, you've eliminated one combatant. You wound the same soldier instead, and roughly ten to twelve men will be tied up caring for his wounds and transporting him for medical attention.
While any bullet from the lowly .22 short or .25 can be lethal with the proper placement, the .223 was designed to be less lethal than previous weapons of war, to tie up the enemy's resources and to possibly allow some of its fighting men to live, to return home after the fighting stops.

Consider that 103 people were shot in Orlando and over half of them, so far, survived the shooting. Knee jerk reactions to ban the AR style of rifle may have the unintended consequence of putting even more lethal firepower into the hands of some future evil assassin.

How to Ring Out the Old and Ring in the New...

...with a new gun!

A Uberti Cattleman rifle in .45 Long Colt

Today, I joined thousands of Californians in purchasing one last long gun before a new gun registration law kicks in on New Year's Day. I didn't really need one, (law or gun) but then, the Second Amendment is not found in the Bill of Needs. Plus, according to the Beltway's accounting principles, I actually cut my spending by over a thousand dollars in doing so!

I'd been to a big box sporting goods store on Sunday and didn't see anything that caught me eye, so I went to this smaller sporting goods shop in town, after I finished work this afternoon. I looked around a bit and toyed with the idea of buying this:

A .45 semi-auto Kriss-Vector carbine

A California legal version of their submachine gun. I wasn't that familiar with it, so I read some reviews online, with my smartphone, and handled it a bit, and while I was pondering the wisdom and utility of the purchase, I spied that little Uberti, like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree, kind of little and off to one side. And since I was planning on spending over a thousand dollars more for the Kriss-Vector, I was able to cut my firearm spending over 50% in December alone! Finally, some Washington-style fiscal accountability! Since about half of that was paid for with a small gift card from work, thus, off budget, my budgeted firearms expenses were 'actually' cut over 75%. Now, if this were true Washingtonian budgeting, I would immediately spend the money I "saved" on something else. Maybe some ammo... The year is still young!

Early Bird Doesn't Get Worm, if Worm is Packing Heat

Who are you calling a worm???

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – A 9-year-old boy digging for worms in northern Arizona found a gun buried near his home. Police in Prescott say the stainless-steel .38-caliber revolver was in plastic bag along with one bullet just under the ground's surface. Police say it appears the gun was only covered up to hide it until someone came back to get it. They say they don't know who owns the gun or how it ended up buried near the home of the boy who found it...

Apparently the kid did the right thing and informed his parents or authorities. The NRA runs a program for grade school kids, Eddie Eagle, which instructs kids that if they find a gun, they shouldn't touch it, but tell an adult. Can't let those NRA types near our kids, though. They might infect them with the idea that guns can be useful tools in the right hands sometimes...

Dianne Feinstein Still Hypocritical on Gun Bans

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Dianne Feinstein, the poster girl for hypocrisy when it comes to gun control, has spoken again. For those of you new to this rodeo, Di-Fi, as mayor of San Francisco, passed a law banning all handguns in San Francisco. (While carrying her own concealed and licensed handgun). Aside from the folly of passing yet another law that criminals will ignore*, listen to her latest bit of hypocrisy. Now I heard this on the radio at least twice this AM, but after searching the Internet, have not been able to come up with audio or a transcript of this remark, so if you stumble across it, let me know and I will gladly post a correction or an apology, but what I heard was this:

"No one has yet to show me where an assault rifle is better for self defense than a handgun." -Dianne Feinstein (paraphrased)

My initial reaction was something along the lines of, who made you the final arbiter of what is or isn't acceptable for self defense? Does my car or deodorant or toothpaste have to pass the Di-Fi test before I'm allowed to buy them as well? This was the point Ted Cruz made in comparing the First Amendment to the Second: Are there only 2,200 books the government will allow us to have? Part of her tirade against Ted Cruz this AM was her blustering that she "respects" the Constitution:
"I have great respect for it... I've studied the Constitution myself. I am reasonably well educated..."

Well, again, let's recap: Dianne's handgun ban in San Francisco was overruled as...wait for it...un-Constitutional. Respecting it apparently means something different than "adhering to it" to Ms. Feinstein.

But, then, as I got to thinking about her statement, she implies that handguns are just fine and dandy with her, at least for self defense, it's just those nasty, black scary guns we need to get rid of! Except that, when she thought she had the power, she banned private ownership of handguns from the city where she was mayor. So is she saying, "No one has yet to show me where an assault rifle is better for self defense than a handgun, but we plan on taking them away, too!"

And last, but not least, Di-Fi telling an interviewer, that if she'd had the votes she would have banned all guns, period:

Dianne Feinstein Caught Lying About Her Past Gun Ban Intentions

Dianne Feinstein keeps trying to put lipstick on her gun control pig, but her record indicates that she is in favor of banning all guns. If she has to do it one at a time, that's okay, too. I've detailed elsewhere some of the moronic gun bans passed in California, just because they could. If Dianne Feinstein's "reasonable education" can't bring her any understanding or enlightenment about the Second Amendment, why should we trust her with any of the thousands of pages of laws these dim witted do-gooders crank out every year?

*On the day Di-Fi's handgun gun was passed, I was listening to KCBS radio out of San Francisco. The first story after announcing the handgun ban, was a story about a man who held up a liquor store with a sawed off shotgun. Let's recap: It's illegal to make a sawed of shotgun. It's illegal to possess a sawed off shotgun. It's illegal to transport a loaded shotgun in your vehicle. (Let's presume for the moment our crook didn't use an unloaded gun.) It's illegal to use any kind of shotgun in the commission of a robbery. That's a minimum of four felonies committed by this outstanding citizen of SF. What makes Di-Fi think that one more law on the books will deter the commission of violent crimes?

Bonus points if you can figure out WTF Di-Fi is talking about "imploding bullets":

I’ve seen the bullets that implode.

"Cereal Shot From Guns"? Oh, My!

Anyone else out there old enough to remember when Quaker cereal was advertised as cereal "shot from guns"? Guns!! Guns, I'm telling you!!! This morning, for some reason, the words from an old commercial (newer than this one) to the tune of the 1812 Overture, "This is the cereal that's shot from guns!" came to my mind, and I thought, in a age where students are suspended for drawing guns, making gun noises and generally thinking abut guns, if little Johnny or Mary came to school today, singing the jingle of their favorite cereal, would they be escorted from the school in handcuffs by the local authorities? Sing it with me now...

"This is the cereal that's shot from guns...boom!"

Even the commercial above, if made today, would need a legal disclaimer for when the kid climbs in the cannon or the Quaker sticks his head in: "Warning! Kids: do not try this at home!"

We've come a long way since then, as a society, and not all of it was good.

This Was Your Best Shot?

by Andrew Roman
_______________
I’m disappointed as all hell in President Obama – and not for the reasons you might think. From the man who sumptuously positioned himself between two Greek columns at the dawn of the Hope-And-Change era promising fundamental transformation to this nation came one of the lamest attempts at political histrionics on Wednesday that I have seen in a long time.
What a letdown.
I was expecting so much more.
The anti-constitutional metrosexual from the great Stacker of Wheat who, in that teleprompted imperial voice of his, once told us that we were the ones we’d been waiting for fell painfully – embarrassingly - flat.
It was astonishingly weak. A real yawn.
This was the best he could do? Surrounding himself with children while signing a bunch of stupid, ill-conceived, do-nothing knee-jerk unconstitutional executive orders?
Really?
Frankly, the Obama of old - back when the promise of the post-stimulus age was still ahead of us, when smooches with the New Jersey governor didn’t seem possible, when all of us believed Justice John Roberts knew what a tax was - would have done it much better.
After all, this was a watershed moment for him and his like-minded reactionary, guns-are-evil non-thinking confederates. He was executing a slew of orders to show the world that he was doing something – anything.
Childlike naivety appropriately requires actual children as props, I suppose.
But this wasn’t an Obama moment for the ages. There was nothing particularly memorable here. There were no Kodak moments. No foreign heads of state to bow down to. No anti-American Korean rapper to be seen with. No apologies for America to be made on foreign soil. No troop withdrawal dates to announce. No murders of American citizens to avoid addressing.
Nothing.
It was amateur hour.
Seriously, were there no "product of gun violence" wheelchair-bound kids available to be used as visual aids? Were there no wounded "drive-by shooting" children from the streets of a big city like, say, Chicago handy? No one on the Obama Propoganda Team could round up a nine year old amputee? Or the sibling of a murdered child? Or perhaps a kid blinded by gunfire requiring the help of an aide to read his or her heartfelt letter aloud? Grieving parents? Outraged actors? Maybe Steve Carrell could have been on stage with him, wheeling around pre-pubescent victims of assault weapon madness?

There's lame, and there's lame.

Remember when Obama could exploit with the best of them?
The President is slipping.
This is the man who invented the Office of President Elect.
This is what he came up with?
Pretty pathetic, Bam.
