Private First Class Ernest E. West

Citation:

Pfc. West distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. He voluntarily accompanied a contingent to locate and destroy a reported enemy outpost. Nearing the objective, the patrol was ambushed and suffered numerous casualties. Observing his wounded leader Iying in an exposed position, Pfc. West ordered the troops to withdraw, then braved intense fire to reach and assist him. While attempting evacuation, he was attacked by 3 hostile soldiers employing grenades and small-arms fire. Quickly shifting his body to shelter the officer, he killed the assailants with his rifle, then carried the helpless man to safety. He was critically wounded and lost an eye in this action. but courageously returned through withering fire and bursting shells to assist the wounded. While evacuating 2 comrades, he closed with and killed 3 more of the foe. Pfc. West's indomitable spirit, consummate valor, and intrepid actions inspired all who observed him, reflect the highest credit on himself, and uphold the honored traditions of the military service.

Pfc. West: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

The Empty Chair for "Step Forward" (video)

I saw this on TV last night. At first, I thought it was an Obama campaign commercial, but it appears to be an old PSA (public service announcement) for Step Forward. Someone apparently thought it would be a good idea to run this multiple times, in prime time, as a sort of "contribution in kind" to the Obama campaign.

One thing that would have be changed had they remade this PSA recently, is the empty chair about 20 seconds in.

Horst Jankowski - "Eine Schwarzwaldfahrt" (A Walk In The Black Forest)

Mission Accomplished, Mr. Eastwood!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Clint Eastwood's novel speech to the Republican National Convention this year was far more effective, I believe, than he ever dreamed. Not only is there a proliferation of empty chair avatars in the social media, but there is this story out of Texas, where Obama is so identified with an empty chair, that a man was accused of hate speech for hanging a chair on a tree.

A Texas man who hung a chair from a tree on his front lawn — in an apparent rebuff of President Obama and nod to Clint Eastwood — has taken down the display after offended locals associated it with the lynching of blacks. Austin homeowner Bud Johnson, 73, said he removed the stupefying sight Thursday because of a misconception.

“I decided to make the change because some people are stupid,” Johnson told an Austin American-Statesman columnist. Eastwood made the empty chair a political prop during a Republican National Convention speech last month, when the “Dirty Harry” star scolded an invisible Obama symbolized by a stool.

The Texas incident follows another display of an empty chair hung from a tree in Centreville, Va., earlier this week. A photo of the chair posted online included a “Nobama” sign.

I don't believe this man was suggesting that Obama be "lynched", but it certainly illustrates just how pervasive the meme of "Obama as empty chair" has become, if depicting a chair in a less that flattering fashion, or one perceived as threatening, is taken as a criticism of President Obama himself.

Another historic first for Obama! The first African-American president to be associated with an empty chair! And here you thought all along he was just an empty suit!

Major Jay R. Vargas

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as commanding officer, Company G, in action against enemy forces from 30 April to 2 May 1968. On 1 May 1968, though suffering from wounds he had incurred while relocating his unit under heavy enemy fire the preceding day, Maj. Vargas combined Company G with two other companies and led his men in an attack on the fortified village of Dai Do. Exercising expert leadership, he maneuvered his marines across 700 meters of open rice paddy while under intense enemy mortar, rocket and artillery fire and obtained a foothold in 2 hedgerows on the enemy perimeter, only to have elements of his company become pinned down by the intense enemy fire. Leading his reserve platoon to the aid of his beleaguered men, Maj. Vargas inspired his men to renew their relentless advance, while destroying a number of enemy bunkers. Again wounded by grenade fragments, he refused aid as he moved about the hazardous area reorganizing his unit into a strong defense perimeter at the edge of the village. Shortly after the objective was secured the enemy commenced a series of counterattacks and probes which lasted throughout the night but were unsuccessful as the gallant defenders of Company G stood firm in their hard-won enclave. Reinforced the following morning, the marines launched a renewed assault through Dai Do on the village of Dinh To, to which the enemy retaliated with a massive counterattack resulting in hand-to-hand combat. Maj. Vargas remained in the open, encouraging and rendering assistance to his marines when he was hit for the third time in the 3-day battle. Observing his battalion commander sustain a serious wound, he disregarded his excruciating pain, crossed the fire-swept area and carried his commander to a covered position, then resumed supervising and encouraging his men while simultaneously assisting in organizing the battalion's perimeter defense. His gallant actions uphold the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the U.S. Naval Service.

Major Vargas: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

The Foreign-Policy Disaster Maker

by Andrew Roman

_______________________

So, while the American left obsessively spent most of the last thirty six hours or so trying to divert attention away from the continuing disaster that is Barack Obama in the White House, my thoughts were focused on matters that are actually relevant to the real world.

Islamic rage was all the rage late last week. It continued into the weekend and right on into this week at points all across the globe. From the assault on our embassy in Cairo to the murder of four Americans in Libya, from the fires set at our embassy in Tunisia to mobs burning our flag in London, there was no respite.  We were told that an obscure video negatively depicting the Prophet Mohammed was responsible for triggering this latest edition of Muslim fury. The shock waves of this insult even found its way onto American shores when two college campuses were shut down and evacuated last Friday due to threats from some entity identifying itself as Al Qaeda. The nuclear facility at the University of Texas was also evacuated.

On Monday, we heard of new waves of protests breaking out in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Yesterday, we heard about an Iranian submarine being deployed in the Persian Gulf.

And while we were reminded by the First Lady last week that the greatest threat to national security is, in fact, obesity, anyone who may have been holding their breath waiting for the President (or anyone in this administration) to use the words “terrorist” or “terrorism” - or heaven forbid it, an “act of war” – regarding the attacks on our consulate and embassies has long since keeled over. (Just imagine if the terrorists had stormed the consulate brandishing twinkies and Doritos). Equally, anyone who may have been hoping for a strong showing from the leader of the free world in the wake of terrorist acts against American interests on the eleventh anniversary of the worst single act of terrorism in this country’s history had better find a new place to channel that hope.

The lamestream media did not see the immediate need, nor recognize the immediate relevance, in asking this President of the United States why security was not beefed up at American embassies in hostile territories for the 9/11 anniversary, but have had no problem utilizing every nanosecond of air time over the past day and a half to turn its collective focus on Mitt Romney and comments he made about non-income-tax-paying Americans.   (Had Obama been a Republican is there any doubt he’d have been hammered with this obvious question?) They didn’t bother to inquire as to why he, as Commander-In-Chief, did not (and still does not) feel the need to attend the majority of his own intelligence briefings. They didn’t even ask how he and fellow Democrats can claim that Mitt Romney was playing politics with the events overseas when President Obama himself flew to a Las Vegas fundraiser that same day.

Fortunately for us, the White House on Friday assured the public that the anti-American violence was not directed at the United States.

Repeat: Not directed at the United States.

It must have been the storming of the American embassies, the torching of American flags and the burning of President Obama in effigy that confused me.

Jay Carney, White House Press Secretary, wasted no time espousing the administration’s view that the inane little anti-Mohammed YouTube video being “credited” for triggering all of this terroristic upheaval – the one unseen and unheard of by just about every living human being on earth – was officially judged to “be reprehensible and disgusting.”

Thank heaven that was cleared up.

So, in the wake of Americans being murdered and our interests remaining under assault overseas, while our embassies were being attacked, while American flags were being burned, while protests were spreading, and while the entire region teetered on the brink of full explosion, our President wanted to let the bad guys know that we think the film that supposedly made all of them mad is disgusting?

Leadership.

Meanwhile, those of us who recoil and wince at this ongoing projection of American weakness and appeasement do not give a rat’s earlobe how offended or insulted radical murderers become. The instant the decision was made  to trade insults for innocent lives, their feelings about anything became irrelevant. The fact that Americans were murdered because of an amateurish internet movie that no one saw, followed by an official stance of “I’m sorry” by our pathetic Clinton-run State Department was – and is – enough to make me sick. Meanwhile, I’m still waiting to hear which adjectives the White House will muster to describe the breeches of American sovereignty through these terrorist acts overseas. Surely, Obamacrats are aware that embassies actually do represent sovereign states - that an attack on an embassy is, by definition, an attack on the country itself.

Oh wait, these events transpired last week. It's old hat. It's immaterial today because that lout Mitt Romney had the nerve – the unmitigated gall – to talk about the 47% of Americans who do not pay income tax….their fair share, to quote a phrase.

To his credit, Carney did concede that the ever-escalating acts of protest and violence overseas were “fairly volatile.”

Fairly volatile.

Yet the movie was reprehensible.

I cannot help but ponder: How many dead Americans move that word from the “fairly volatile” column to the “reprehensible” column.

Indeed, there are times when it is impossible to determine whether or not this administration is actually as incompetent and clueless as they portray themselves, or whether they are commandeering a calculated effort to make sure that no one alive (save for Christians and Republicans) is ever offended again – as if to be loved is (or should be) the United States’ purpose on this globe. On a daily basis, I watch how this President handles himself, this country and world at large, and almost daily I am astounded at the absolute ineptitude I see.

How, for instance, can the President of the United States look so ridiculously indecisive – I mean embarrassingly bad - when asked if Egypt is an American ally?

How can he possibly say that Mitt Romney “shoots before he aims” when the President himself jumped the gun (if not the entire arsenal) when declaring the Cambridge, Massachusetts police department stupid in what was a nonexistent case of racism in the matter of Professor Henry Gates? Or commenting on the Trayvon Martin killing before knowing any of the facts (wasting no time interjecting his race into the matter).

This is the man who has, time and time again, spoke ill of his own country on foreign soil and has bowed to foreign heads of state. He has adopted an apology-first approach in dealing with the world-at-large – his I’m- sorry-we’re- so-big-and-powerful motif - that has done nothing but alienate long-time friends and allies while emboldening America’s enemies. It quite literally sickens me.

He continues his hell-bent pursuit of reducing America’s relevance and influence in the world, while proffering a position of moral equivalence – the How-can-I-ask-Iran-To-Not-Pursue-Nukes-When-We-Have-So-Many approach.  He is almost obsessed with being as inoffensive as he can to those who would – and do – commit evil acts on innocents (the “t” word), but has absolutely no problem unleashing his wrath on American entrepreneurs and innovators with his “you didn’t build that” message.

The man who won the Nobel Peace Prize for doing absolutely nothing and for saying that he was uniquely qualified to bring stability to American-Muslim relations – the man who predicted that his living in a Muslim country as a boy would be a useful tool in promoting international Kumbaya, saying, “I truly believe that the day I’m inaugurated, not only does the country look at itself differently, but the world looks at America differently. If I’m reaching out to the Muslim world, they understand that I’ve lived in a Muslim country, and I may be a Christian, but I also understand their point of view” – must now be wondering what has gone wrong. Everything was in place for a complete transmutation of a pre-Obama world into a post-everything age of peace, stability and fuzzy bunnies.

Surely, this unrest cannot be because of him - the leader of a fundamentally transforming United States - or his policies. It must be - has to be - that lousy filmmaker. After all, President Obama has a half-Indonesian sister.

This is the man who apologized in Cairo for his country employing interrogation techniques that saved countless innocent lives and ultimately contributed to the killing of Osama Bin Ladin. This is the man who has called his own country arrogant and dismissive. This is the man who condemned his own nation for “too often” making decisions “based on fear rather than foresight.” This is the man who publically announced military withdrawal dates from war zones, thus lightening the load for our enemies. This is the man who said nothing while Iran’s government killed innocents during uprisings there. This is the man determined to make dangerous and drastic cuts to our defense budget.

So, in a world where angry Muslims seem to be dictating the terms – a world where French fear is prompting the closure of twenty of its embassies worldwide because of a cartoon – the President of the United States continues to believe that peace through softness is the correct course. In a world where our collapsing exit strategy in Afghanistan is making things exponentially more unstable and chaotic, the President finds time for $40,000-a-plate fundraisers in New York and fun-loving sit-downs with David Letterman. In a world where video cameras just happened to be present as police found and took into custody the two-bit movie maker in the middle of the night (for other reasons, of course), President Obama parties with Jay-Z and Beyonce.

Meanwhile, the press continues its assault on Mitt Romney, that heartless bastard.

Welcome to the future, Mr. President.

You did build this.

Great Moments in Hypocrisy - Starring Harry Reid

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Last week, I was driving down to Fresno, and I heard something so outrageously hypocritical from Senate majority leader Harry Reid, that I thought to myself, if there is a Hypocrites' Hall of Fame, that Mr. Reid would surely get in on the first draft. And then, each subsequent newscast provided yet another line just as Hall of Fame worthy. Perhaps the biggest laugher was this one on the Republicans budget plans:
"What loopholes do they want to close? They will not say. It's part of their fictitious math."

"They will not say". Gosh, Harry! I can't imagine a political party not explicitly writing down what their spending goals are for the country. We could call it a...budget! Say, haven't you failed to produce a budget in the Senate for over three years now, Mr. Reid? What exactly are you and the Democrats "not saying"? Harry, you and the Democrats have been "not saying" what the federal budget should be since before the 2010 elections, probably because you knew that if the public was aware of the specifics of the Democrats' spending plan, your large losses in 2010 would have been much, much larger.

Hypocrisy, thy name is Harry.

Obama in His Own Words

Here's some video to go with today's Quote de jour...

Arrogance or naiveté ? Both? In any event, we cannot have someone with Obama's fairy tale view of the world leading our country for the next four years.

Quote du jour

"I truly believe that the day I’m inaugurated…the whole world looks at America differently. If I’m reaching out to the Muslim world they understand that I’ve lived in a Muslim country…I understand their point of view….And that will ultimately make us safer.”

Waving bin Laden's "Bloody Shirt"

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

If you watched any of the recent Democrat convention in Charlotte recently, you probably noted the prominent waving of Osama bin Laden's "bloody shirt". A number of speakers, including the president himself, paraded it out as a major accomplishment of his administration. This is not terribly surprising, since there are so few of them to brag about! We noted that here, last May.

Obama also brought it up himself in his speech to the U.N. last year. In a fashion which invokes my maxim that liberals are irony impaired, Obama said famously:

Osama bin Laden is gone, and the idea that change could only come through violence has been buried with him.

You get that? We did away with the idea that "change could only come through violence" by shooting him in the face! I'll give you a second to chew over that little gem!

Do you remember the rationale of this administration in not releasing the death photos of bin Laden? That releasing the photos could trigger "violence, attacks, or acts of revenge" against the U. S. That was reportedly also the reason that Obama said he would not "spike the ball" over OBL's death. Even though, he has repeatedly broken that pledge. He mentioned OBL twice in his 2012 SOTU address.

Which do you think would have a wider influence on the world in general? A You Tube video of the trailer, of a low budget, obscure movie that almost no one has ever seen or heard about, or the President of the United States and his surrogates, repeatedly and gleefully boasting about the death of Osama bin Laden?

Since the Obama administration itself acknowledged that the death of bin Laden could be inflammatory and cause violence retaliation, would it not be fair to state that more than just photographs could cause that "inflammation"? Has this administration forgotten that there can be power in words as well?

For example, if I told you that someone had broken into your house, killed your parents and raped your sister, would you say to me, "That's all very interesting, but I have to wait to see some photos before I can muster any outrage."? I don't think so.

But, yet, for the sake of some supposed political advantage, Obama continues to poke Islamic extremists in the eye over the death of bin Laden, because of the barrenness of his own accomplishments over the last four years.

I know it is just speculation on my part, but I would venture that Obama's continually spiking the ball over bin Laden's death and his years long victory celebration in the endzone did more to foment the unrest at our embassies than any You Tube video, or at the very least, contributed to it. Add to this, the Egyptian rioters chanting "Obama, Obama: We are all Osama!", and it appears that waving the bloody shirt may have indeed had more influence than any You Tube video. The video may have provided an additional spark, but the powderkeg was long primed.

When the President of the United States speaks, as the leader of the last remaining superpower, his words are repeated and analyzed on television, radio, newspapers, the Internet and by word of mouth, as opposed to a single video, lost in the clutter of You Tube. His influence is greater, his audience more far reaching.

At best, Obama bragging about bin Laden has become a national joke, starting with SNL and reaching across the Internet, where anything Obama says can be appended with, "Oh, and by the way, did I tell you I got bin Laden?", and it is still plausible enough to elicit a sad smile. As in a recent event where the families of fallen soldiers being returned to the US, had asked that there be no cameras at the event, so President Obama brought his own photographer.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

There was something unseemly about seeing John "Magic Hat" Kerry at the convention, who bolted as soon as he could from the field of conflict in Viet Nam, with three dubious Purple Hearts, who then went on to publicly denigrate America's armed forces, trying to bask in the glory of America's genuine heroes. Likewise with a Commander-in-Chief grossly unfamiliar with both military history and tradition. It is even worse when they acknowledge that America's fighting forces could be put at risk with provocations over bin Laden's death, and yet, they repeatedly bring it up, "spiking the ball" for political gain.

Maybe our next president will recognize that we still live in a dangerous world, and take the job seriously enough to at least attend the daily national security briefings?

The Current Header and our "Head" of State

Some folk might take exception to a picture of our Commander-in-Chief in his golfing clothes while our embassies were being attacked. In all fairness to the president, he was not golfing. He was at a fundraiser in Vegas.

Obama has been skipping his presidential national security briefings of late, in favor of campaigning and fundraising. The return of the bodies of our diplomats and staff from the attacks on our embassies in the Middle East caused him to take a break from his busy campaign schedule to return for a memorial service. As I not kindly noted on Twitter,

"You want the president's attention? Come home in a box!"

Harsh note to follow...
