Barack Constanza's (Unexpected) Incredible Shrinking Economy

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Remember just before the election, when conservatives were telling you not to believe the rosy scenario being painted by the administration on things like unemployment figures? Unemployment dropped below 8% when the economic anchor that is (liberal) California failed to produce their unemployment figures in a timely manner, which just happened to bring the national average down...as if there had been some actual improvement?

And how many times have the economist flacks for this administration told you in the last four years, that each subsequent piece of bad economic news was "unexpected"? The absence of leadership from the top, combined with the absence of pro-growth policies, and reckless, out of control spending, have put this nation on a very predictable course for economic disaster. There should be nothing "unexpected" about it, at least for those who are paying attention.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. economy shrank unexpectedly late last year, a reminder of the biggest threat it faces in 2013: sharp government spending cuts and prolonged political budget fights.

A plunge in defense spending helped push the economy into negative territory for the first time since mid-2009. The contraction in the October-December quarter came in at an annual rate of 0.1 percent, according to a government estimate released Wednesday.

Note first, the use of the ubiquitous "unexpectedly" in the lead. Ever get the impression that Forrest Gump is the editor in chief of most major news organizations?
"Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."
Sorry, Forrest, but, yeah, we do! The ones that look like nuts covered in chocolate are generally chocolate covered nuts! To be completely surprised at every turn of the economy takes a far simpler mind than Forrest Gump's. Or someone in the tank for liberal politicians.

Note secondly the role attributed to government spending in propping up the economy. In bad economic times, average people tend to cut back their spending to essentials, and try to squirrel a little away in case times get worse. Governments, on the other hand, feel an entitlement to spend whatever they please, knowing that they can always print more money or extort more from their subjects.

So when government spending is finally curtailed, (in this case, by cuts in the military, which perhaps should be the last on the cutting room floor, not the first), those segments of the economy dependent on government cut back on their inventories, salaries and expansion plans, which further shrinks the economy.

Now before you draw the wrong conclusion about government spending as a stimulant to the economy*, remember than in order for government to spend a dollar in the economy, it must first take that dollar from someplace else in the economy. Worse yet is the inefficiencies of government, both from the amount of overhead siphoned off that dollar to maintain the bureaucracy, but often spending those dollars in inefficient or counter productive ways. Can you say "Solyndra"? When a company or individual who is creating wealth spends money, it is often reinvested in ways which grow their enterprises, increase their wealth, and increase the coffers of both private and public sectors, in addition to creating new, self-sustaining jogs.

In short, to channel my inner Jeff Foxworthy,
If you are an economist and are constantly surprised by just how bad the economic news is...you might be a liberal!

*Remember Nancy Pelosi's claim that for every dollar spent on food stamps, $1.79 is put back into the economy? It must follow then, that every dollar in taxes that government takes out of your pocket depresses economic activity by $1.79, right? Again, made worse by the fact that government overhead for the food stamp program could mean that government has to tax us $1.80 to provide that one dollar for food stamps that yielded the $1.79.

Captain Wesley L. Fox

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as commanding officer of Company A, in action against the enemy in the northern A Shau Valley. Capt. (then 1st Lt.) Fox's company came under intense fire from a large well concealed enemy force. Capt. Fox maneuvered to a position from which he could assess the situation and confer with his platoon leaders. As they departed to execute the plan he had devised, the enemy attacked and Capt. Fox was wounded along with all of the other members of the command group, except the executive officer. Capt. Fox continued to direct the activity of his company. Advancing through heavy enemy fire, he personally neutralized 1 enemy position and calmly ordered an assault against the hostile emplacements. He then moved through the hazardous area coordinating aircraft support with the activities of his men. When his executive officer was mortally wounded, Capt. Fox reorganized the company and directed the fire of his men as they hurled grenades against the enemy and drove the hostile forces into retreat. Wounded again in the final assault, Capt. Fox refused medical attention, established a defensive posture, and supervised the preparation of casualties for medical evacuation. His indomitable courage, inspiring initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger inspired his marines to such aggressive action that they overcame all enemy resistance and destroyed a large bunker complex. Capt. Fox's heroic actions reflect great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps, and uphold the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

Capt. Fox: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

H/T Randy's Roundtable

I Am the Very Model of a Modern Liberal Democrat

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

LIBERAL
I am the very model of a modern liberal democrat
A hurtful, hate-filled, vile, vicious, low down, no good, dirty rat
I’m venal and pernicious and obnoxious and deplorable
And yet despite it all my mother still finds me adorable.
I spend my time producing copious amounts of excrement
Then fling it, like a monkey, ’round all over Al Gores internet
I loudly shout to one and all my intellect superior
Then demonstrate with equal verve my acumen inferior.

ALL
Then demonstrate with equal verve my acumen inferior.
Then demonstrate with equal verve my acumen inferior.
Then demonstrate with equal verve my acumen inferi-eiror.

LIBERAL
My grasp of fact is not the best; in truth it is quite tenuous
My view of history, ‘bout the same, is fractured, filtered, nebulous.
A hurtful hate-filled vile vicious low down no good dirty rat
I am the very model of a modern liberal democrat.

ALL
A hurtful hate-filled vile vicious low down no good dirty rat
He is the very model of a modern liberal democrat.

LIBERAL
I’ve studied Saul Alinsky and I’m practiced as a radical.
I cling to every tenant of the socialist, fanatical.
I make my rounds of all the liberal hotspots on the internet.
Then parrot what I read just like some kind of mind numb malcontent.
The topics that I comment on are peppered well with BDS.
I get the talking points I mouth from CNN and PBS.
The New York Times is like a bible that I pray to everyday.
I never question anything, no matter how dumb, that they say.

ALL
I never question anything, no matter how dumb, that they say
I never question anything, no matter how dumb, that they say
I never question anything, no matter how dumb, that they say, they say.

LIBERAL
I bloviate and obfuscate and knowingly prevaricate
I castigate, vituperate, at slinging mud, I’m really great.
A hurtful hate-filled vile vicious low down no good dirty rat
I am the very model of a modern liberal democrat.

ALL
A hurtful hate-filled vile vicious low down no good dirty rat
He is the very model of a modern liberal democrat.

LIBERAL
In fact when I can denigrate an African American (R)
With slurs the like of which were never dreamt of by the Ku Klux Klan.
When I can fight for death row cads just like they were my son or brother
Or the right of murder that belongs to an expectant mother.
When I can call my enemy, but not my homo friend, a fag
And tolerate behavior that would likely make a maggot gag.
Then all my wastrel pals would turn their beaming faces up at me
And say a better liberal democrat they never hope to see.

For my militant proclivities, both overt and clandestine-y,
Have only been brought down since the middle of our last century.
But still, a hate-filled vile vicious low-down no good dirty rat,
I am the very model of a modern liberal democrat.

There’s no accounting for taste. Obama is the hero of “progressive” America, and the hero of black America. Romney is the great ogre — clueless, if not callous. But who did all he could to snatch school choice from poor black children in Washington, D.C.? Obama did. These are children who, without choice, would have to go to wretched and violent schools. Schools where no learning can take place. Schools where no hope exists. Schools very much unlike the one to which Obama sends his own kids. Obama stood in the schoolhouse door.

I didn't plan it this way, but today has a distinctive vegetarian vibe about it. The following is dedicated to all of you who've tried to "amend your carnivorous habits"...

With Super Bowl XLVII coming next week, I figured some of you needed a brush up on your Roman numerals, so to the delight of some and the chagrin of others, after a long hiatus, we continue with yet one more tribute to those lovely lasses who would bare their assets to further the cause of PETA.

Because the world needs more naked, nearly naked and vegetable clad vegetarians!

Captain Robert F. Foley

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Capt. Foley's company was ordered to extricate another company of the battalion. Moving through the dense jungle to aid the besieged unit, Company A encountered a strong enemy force occupying well concealed, defensive positions, and the company's leading element quickly sustained several casualties. Capt. Foley immediately ran forward to the scene of the most intense action to direct the company's efforts. Deploying 1 platoon on the flank, he led the other 2 platoons in an attack on the enemy in the face of intense fire. During this action both radio operators accompanying him were wounded. At grave risk to himself he defied the enemy's murderous fire, and helped the wounded operators to a position where they could receive medical care. As he moved forward again 1 of his machinegun crews was wounded. Seizing the weapon, he charged forward firing the machinegun, shouting orders and rallying his men, thus maintaining the momentum of the attack. Under increasingly heavy enemy fire he ordered his assistant to take cover and, alone, Capt. Foley continued to advance firing the machinegun until the wounded had been evacuated and the attack in this area could be resumed. When movement on the other flank was halted by the enemy's fanatical defense, Capt. Foley moved to personally direct this critical phase of the battle. Leading the renewed effort he was blown off his feet and wounded by an enemy grenade. Despite his painful wounds he refused medical aid and persevered in the forefront of the attack on the enemy redoubt. He led the assault on several enemy gun emplacements and, single-handedly, destroyed 3 such positions. His outstanding personal leadership under intense enemy fire during the fierce battle which lasted for several hours, inspired his men to heroic efforts and was instrumental in the ultimate success of the operation. Capt. Foley's magnificent courage, selfless concern for his men and professional skill reflect the utmost credit upon himself and the U.S. Army.

Captain Foley: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.
