Would You Like Some OJ With That Race Baiting?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

If you've been a conservative who has ever spoken his or her mind about our current president, you've undoubtedly been treated to the mindless, knee jerk reaction of a dull witted liberal (but I repeat myself), that the only reason you oppose Barack Obama is 'because he's black'. The recent 20 year anniversary of the slow moving, white Bronco (no, not John Elway!*), got me to thinking about O.J. Simpson. OJ was a very popular fellow. A football star in college, OJ played in the NFL for nine years: eight with the Buffalo Bills, one with the S.F. 49er's. He won the Heisman Trophy, among other awards, played in 6 NFL Pro Bowls, was drafted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, became a commentator on Monday Night Football, acted and starred in numerous motion pictures...oh, and did I mention that OJ is black??? I only mention that, insomuch, that I don't think of OJ as a "black" NFL player, a "black" actor or a "black" murderer, any more than I think of George Hamilton as a "chestnut brown" actor or John Boehner as the "orange" Speaker of the House. Their race and color is irrelevant.

So, here's OJ, a black man, a household name in most of America, well liked and popular, whose star was eclipsed suddenly because of something that he allegedly did. It wasn't his race that people took exception with, it was his actions, or at least those that people imagined he did.

Why can't you modern liberals conceivably apply the same standard to the OJ of the Oval Office? Conservatives oppose the exact same policies when espoused by Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid and they are white, orange and gray, respectively. Still, the same old, tired canard about race pops up in nearly every discussion. Can't we just 'cut to the chase', as it were, and get to the part where you have absolutely no argument apart from the race card? It would save ever so much time and then we could reserve the term "racist" for those few despicable folk who truly deserve it, and not just people who disagree with you politically.

The world has caught on that Obama uses a host of emphatics (e.g., Period!, Let me be clear!, Make no mistake about it!) precisely because he seeks to accomplish in speech what he cannot do in fact. Our enemies see one constant in the litany of administration scandals — the VA, IRS, NSA, AP, Fast and Furious, and Benghazi debacles: presidential distraction and indifference. The occasional eloquent presidential proclamations of “outrageous” are not followed by even a smidgeon of consequences.

Captain Robert F. Foley

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Capt. Foley's company was ordered to extricate another company of the battalion. Moving through the dense jungle to aid the besieged unit, Company A encountered a strong enemy force occupying well concealed, defensive positions, and the company's leading element quickly sustained several casualties. Capt. Foley immediately ran forward to the scene of the most intense action to direct the company's efforts. Deploying 1 platoon on the flank, he led the other 2 platoons in an attack on the enemy in the face of intense fire. During this action both radio operators accompanying him were wounded. At grave risk to himself he defied the enemy's murderous fire, and helped the wounded operators to a position where they could receive medical care. As he moved forward again 1 of his machinegun crews was wounded. Seizing the weapon, he charged forward firing the machinegun, shouting orders and rallying his men, thus maintaining the momentum of the attack. Under increasingly heavy enemy fire he ordered his assistant to take cover and, alone, Capt. Foley continued to advance firing the machinegun until the wounded had been evacuated and the attack in this area could be resumed. When movement on the other flank was halted by the enemy's fanatical defense, Capt. Foley moved to personally direct this critical phase of the battle. Leading the renewed effort he was blown off his feet and wounded by an enemy grenade. Despite his painful wounds he refused medical aid and persevered in the forefront of the attack on the enemy redoubt. He led the assault on several enemy gun emplacements and, single-handedly, destroyed 3 such positions. His outstanding personal leadership under intense enemy fire during the fierce battle which lasted for several hours, inspired his men to heroic efforts and was instrumental in the ultimate success of the operation. Capt. Foley's magnificent courage, selfless concern for his men and professional skill reflect the utmost credit upon himself and the U.S. Army.

Captain Foley: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

Stockton, California: Down, but not Out!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Stockton, California, as you might know, was the first major American city to declare bankruptcy during the Obama Recovery. This honor was stolen from them by the city of Detroit, larger and mismanaged by Democrats for years. Another of Stockton's claims to fame was its annual Asparagus Festival, which was moved from a scenic parklike setting (in an actual park) to downtown Stockton for the last couple of years, and this year, in the midst of a major drought, a virtual monsoon hit during the weekend of the festival, proving once again that if you want to make God laugh, simply tell Him your plans.

After the drenching downpour discouraged nearly everyone who even thought about going to the festival this year, they didn't even break even. Faced with debts and a bankrupt city, unable to bail them out, the Asparagus Festival folded its rented tents and began to sell off the deep fryers, woks and asparagus margarita glasses which were its staples. Hey! don't knock the asparagus margaritas! They were pretty good! Along with the steak and asparagus sandwiches, deep fried 'gras and hundreds of other delicacies.

All good things must come to an end. But, suddenly, there is a ray of hope for Stockton, via the social media. On the Stockton P.D.'s Facebook page, they posted the Dreamiest Mug Shot, Ever!™ Yes, TMZ and a host of others have proclaimed Stockton's very own incarcerated Jeremy Meeks as the latest online celebrity heart throb.

East your heart out, Beverly Hills!

There's Something About Wal-Mart...

...that drives the libs crazy!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I was set upon by a couple of Wal-Mart haters on Twitter a week or so ago. These guys get really wound up in their vitriolic denunciations of poor old Sam Walton's little retail endeavor. Thinking back, I think the first time I ever heard of Wal-Mart was in a story in the Reader's Digest. (My mom used to subscribe).

There were some stories about how the evil corporate bosses of Wal-Mart would target Small Town USA, shop the competition to find what prices were being charged and then come into town and undercut everyone's prices, until all the small businesses went out of business, and then, when no one had any income left to purchase their products, Wal-Mart would pull up stakes and move to another town, leaving a devastated economy and a ghost town on Main Street.

How rude! Of course, many of the smaller businesses provided services that the big box store couldn't. Unfortunately, they would too often find themselves answering questions about their merchandise, that big box clerks had no idea about, and then, the prospective customers would drive down the street to Wal-Mart and buy the merchandise at a lower price. It's hard enough for a small business to keep their doors open without spending time dispensing free advice to their competitor's customers.

I got to thinking about this the other day, when I recalled a lumber yard here in Stockton, "Hank and Tony's". They were a fixture around here back when my family moved to town. I'd see their advertising year in and year out, and I'd drive by their lumber yard off Harding Way quite frequently. I Googled them to see if they were still in business (I hadn't heard of them in years) and there was a phone listed at a residential address, and the lumber yard on Harding is probably a liquor store or strip mall today.

But, there are at least two Lowe's and two Home Depots in Stockton. I've been doing a little project or two and have hit up all four of them in the last couple of months, to find necessary supplies. Who mourns for Hank and Tony's? There are big box lumber stores all over town, but who mourns the little Mom and Pop hardware stores? Book stores? Most of the little ones went out of business long ago and even some of the bigger chains like Borders couldn't cut it. Where is the protest against that 'predatory' Amazon putting book stores out of business?

Jewelry stores? Surely there were Mom and Pop jewelry stores before Zanes and Kay's and Rogers, corner lot car dealers put out of business by mega multi-dealerships, shade tree mechanics put out of business by Midas, and Sears, and Pep Boys... so, why the maniacal outrage over Wal-Mart?

If I had to guess, I would say that it is the non-union status of Wal-Mart that gets liberal panties in a wad. They pay good wages and benefits. Whenever a new Wal-Mart opens up, people line up around the block to apply for the openings. But, they pay less than union wages for similar jobs, which allows Wal-Mart to keep their prices lower than union shops. If Wal-Mart unionized tomorrow, I'd guess liberals would be singing their praises*.

Business who can cut their costs due to economy of scale or innovation will prosper. If the services you provide in addition to your merchandise are sufficiently valuable that your customers are willing to pay more, you will survive.
There are no guarantees. If you want a guarantee, buy a toaster.

*and not just Hillary Clinton, who, to her embarrassment, sat on their governing board a while back.

Update: Economic illiteracy may be another reason for the unreasonable fear of Wal-Mart. During the aforementioned Twitter discussion, one of the Haters sent me a graphic which proclaimed : "Even if you don't shop there, Wal-Mart still gets your money." And the first thing on the list was "tax breaks" for CEO bonuses. If you are a socialist and believes everything belongs to the government, then allowing Wal-Mart CEOs to keep more of what they earned, is taking money away from you.

Fun fact: The party whose followers bleat loudest about "loopholes" is the party that controlled one or both houses of Congress for about the last sixty years and personally wrote most of those "loopholes".

Update II: Just saw another one! Unbelievable! Those Wal-Mart Derangement Syndrome folk just keep coming! The latest chart shows, among other things, the average starting salary of a Wal-Mart employee against how much Sam Walton's heirs are getting per year. Gee! Ya think owning the company might be a little more profitable than working for it?? Let's get some ketchup haters in here too! How much is the average starting salary of a Heinz employee compared to what Teresa Heinz Kerry pulls in every year?

Update III: Another example for all you Wal-Mart haters: Paris Hilton. Paris is an heir to the Hilton hotel fortune. Anyone care to guess how her annual income compares to the starting salary of a Hilton hotel employee? Should we be outraged that Paris is paid more than the maid than cleans her hotel suite?? A little Paris hating, anyone???
