Romney Foot in Mouth: "Hang" Misery Index on Obama

From the "Unfortunate Choice of Metaphors" department:

To "hang something" like "an albatross around one's neck" goes back to "The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere" in 1798. However the connotations of the word "hang" should preclude its usage in relation to any black American politician.

Maybe Mitt can see if there's room in his mouth for his other foot?

Feds Sting Amish Farmer Selling Raw Milk Locally

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Intimidate voters with threats of violence in front of a polling place and the Feds send you on your merry way! Sell raw milk to people who want it? The Feds will hunt you down!

A yearlong sting operation, including aliases, a 5 a.m. surprise inspection and surreptitious purchases from an Amish farm in Pennsylvania, culminated in the federal government announcing this week that it has gone to court to stop Rainbow Acres Farm from selling its contraband to willing customers in the Washington area.

The product in question: unpasteurized milk.

It’s a battle that’s been going on behind the scenes for years, with natural foods advocates arguing that raw milk, as it’s also known, is healthier than the pasteurized product, while the Food and Drug Administration says raw milk can carry harmful bacteria such as salmonella, E. coli and listeria.

“It is the FDA’s position that raw milk should never be consumed,”

So, the government decides that a product consumed for thousands of years isn't healthy enough for you, but it's okay to sell tobacco? Anyone ever hear of "secondhand milk" killing anyone? I guess they could put a warning label on it, but sending the police and US marshalls and state troopers out to bust your milk operation?

Smaller government, anyone??

Read the whole thing.

Liberals Who Vote Like Trump. Liberals Who Don't Vote Like "Cops"

Remember that old saying "You are what you eat"? Maybe today it's also true that you are what you watch? National Media Inc. did a demographic study of who watches what on TV, based on their party affiliation and tendency to vote.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Surprise, surprise when I saw a number of my favorites in the upper right hand, Republican who vote quadrant! Celebrity Apprentice, on the other hand, with The Donald, was the show deemed most popular among the most liberal in the audience. Never seen it myself! "Wive Swap", which, in the spirit of full disclosure I have also not seen, was popular with the most liberal in the audience that tends not to vote.

Curious, I thought, was the presence of "Cops" in the more liberal less vote crowd. Isn't this show on (whispers) Fox*? Maybe among liberals who sit home on election day, there is also a fascination with seeing themselves, their friends and their neighbors on TV??

One other surprise was "House". I like the show and would have thought it would have skewed more right, but then, the show did lose some conservative viewers after Lisa Edelstein did that pro-abortion PSA.

I could show you that, but instead, I'll show you one of the reasons some of us still watch, in spite of that:

*Sometimes called "Pox" by those who love it, watch it every day, but are embarrassed to admit it in front of fellow liberals.

Update: Democrat voters watch measurably more television than Republican and swing voters. According to National Media Research

(VIDEO) Drunk Verger Ben Sheward Does Cartwheels in Westminster Abbey After Royal Wedding

by the Left Coast Rebel

We didn't blog or discuss the Royal Wedding yesterday although I found myself incredibly tempted to do so when I saw footage of a Royal Horse royally heading for the Royal Family or Royal Peoples (actually, "commoners", lo and behold).

"Events" like the Royal Wedding don't hold my fleeting interest. I just have a weird personality. For instance the Rose Parade here in California makes my eyes glaze over and develop one of those inner eyelids that sharks have (also known as a nictitating membrane, don't ask how I know that).

Now, if a runaway military tank came barreling down the rose parade avenue, then you would have captivated my hard-to-earn interest (it actually happened here in San Diego, years ago and no, it wasn't affiliated with a parade, just some idiot with inner-working knowledge of an M60 Patton that thought he could terrorize the area with a tank. He died and nearly killed a bunch of people in the meantime).

But, I just can't help myself: I've been that way ever since I was a kid. Some call it ADHD, I call it the 'curse of the overactive mind' or just being a plain-and-simple weirdo (my wife agrees).

Why do I mention any and all of this? Well, I have to blog about the Royal Wedding, or at least something that happened right after the ceremony: video of a priest (actually a verger named Ben Sheward) doing cartwheels at Westminster Abbey, posthaste:

Now that's funny!

But, I wonder if he will be beheaded for his transgression? Remember, not so many hundreds of years ago, King Henry VIII had his wife Anne Boleyn beheaded on the charges of adultery, incest and plotting to murder the king (and with no proof and not necessarily in that order).

And yes, she had 6 fingers on one hand and a large goiter on her neck.

Obama's Birth Certificate a Scam? It Gets Worse...

Having been attacked as a "birther" now, and having my judgment questioned for daring to challenge their veracity of anything produced by this administration, on further examination, it looks worse.

In a former life, I used to be employed by a company that manufactured microfilm cameras and printers. I'd tell you that they were manufactured in Minnesota, but you should stop when you got to the third "M".

A number of things affect the quality of microfilm:
*The density, clarity and contrast of the original image.
*The exposure settings on the camera
*The maintenance and cleanliness of the camera
*The quality and processing of the film
*Proper storage of the processed film
*The maintenance and cleanliness of the microfilm printer

Now, we're going to look at the dog who did not bark, to borrow from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. First look at the copies from the Honolulu Advertiser. (Click here for larger image)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

See the milky white patches in the background of these "negative" prints? That means that for some reason, those patches were underexposed, which would result in a bit of gray haze or background on a positive print. Now look at the copy provided by the White House:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Hokey smokes! Pristine! Clean as a whistle! No haze, no background. If I may be so bold as to say it, almost perfect! Now, even if we were to assume that these documents were recorded within days of each other, it would not be unreasonable to assume that when they were transferred to microfilm, they would have been photographed within seconds of each other!**

Why the dramatic difference in quality? You can see in the White House "copy", the slight shadow of the curvature of whatever book they were bound in, same as the other two. But miraculously, there is none of the clouding or underexposure of the film which would have produced some background, as if the Magic Microfilm Fairy miraculously healed any deficiencies in the system to help illuminate that shining light that would become our President! (And then, probably let it revert back for all you common people!)

Yeah. Right.

Again. Don't shoot the messenger, but this appears to be yet more evidence that whatever the White House is passing off as genuine, is not.

**And almost undoubtedly on the same roll or cartridge of film. I suppose it is theoretically possible that the documents would be on two different rolls, but highly unlikely. And then the conditions of the film and the filming still would not be that dramatic, IMHO.

Update: I don't know if this will help the hopeless to see what I'm talking about, but I thought I'd give it a shot!

Rep. Allen West Tells the Truth on Medicare, Left Reacts Predictably

by the Left Coast Rebel

Tea Party Representative Allen West (Future POTUS-FL) has been in the news a lot lately, and that's a good thing.

West -- in my humble opinion -- may just one day be President of this country. Trust me, the guy has a bright future and the sky's the limit. Also, if patriots like Allen West were in the mix in the GOP 2012 hopeful field, there would be a lot more excitement than there is at this time -- and he's the real deal and not a publicity-whoring charlatan with anything but a conservative or libertarian track record.

Anyway, the congressman doesn't mince words (which is just what we need today), talking candidly about the program that has the highest unfunded liability going forward and is the ultimate third rail in American politics: Medicare.

Florida's WPTV reports:

BOCA RATON, Fla. - If those opposed to U.S. Rep. Allen West have their way, the 2012 election will be fought on his recent vote to privatize Medicare starting in 2023.

They got loud during a town hall meeting the congressman held Wednesday night in Boca Raton.

The man designated to read questions from audience members read one word a lot: "Medicare."

And if you know Congressman Allen West and what he thinks of Medicare, the program that delivers health care to 38 million seniors and that national polls say is largely supported, his response was what you'd expect.

"I gotta tell you something: if you support Medicare the way it is now, you can kiss the United States of America goodbye," said West.

Here's video:

Look for the Democrats to demagogue the heck out of West's honest statement (check Soros-funded Think Progress for this) but West is correct: Medicare alone spells the end for the United States as we have all known, loved and cherished it (as in a prosperous and free nation, wherein one retains the majority of one's earnings and is left alone and able to pursue happiness).

Michael Tanner at Cato tells us why we are facing impending doom and her name is Medicare:

Social Security faces unfunded liabilities of more than $15.8 trillion. And while that sounds like a lot of money, it is dwarfed by Medicare's looming budget shortfall of between $50 and $100 trillion, depending on which accounting measure is used. Because of its funding mechanisms, Medicaid does face the same type of accounting shortfalls, but it will soon add hundreds of billions of dollars to federal, not to mention state, spending.

As the full force of entitlement programs kicks in, the federal government will consume more than 40 percent of GDP by the middle of the century. Half of that will be taken up by just those three entitlement programs. From there, it only gets worse.

Sobering, especially when you consider that the Tea Party and limited government movement achieved such a huge victory in November yet the fools that got us into this mess are still in GOP leadership positions and ready, able, and willing to sell their souls for a few pieces of silver.

We need more straight talk like that of Allen West, aka Mr. "you're not going to intimidate me...."

Updated: I'm not the only one thinking of Allen West in the White House, stop by this Draft Allen West for President in 2012 Facebook page. There's also a great site set up exclusively for the effort to draft Allen West for President, 2012: draftallenwest2012.com.

(VIDEO) Eyewitness, Ground-Level Views of Tornadoes in Tuscaloosa, Alabama

by the Left Coast Rebel

Eyewitness videos shot at ground level yesterday, during the tornadoes that ravaged the Tuscaloosa, Oklahoma area. In this video you can hear the eyewitness (in his/her car) breathing heavily, it's pretty obvious that the tornado may have headed straight for the car that they are in:

This one was shot by Youtube user Jason835a, described as, "This video is from the EF4 tornado that went through Tuscaloosa, AL on 4/27/11. It was taken from the University Mall parking lot. Probably the closest video to the storm your going to see." Again, it sure looks to me like the twister could have headed straight for him, too (and then it does and he speeds away, check the 3:00 mark for true insanity):

An eyewitness caught this footage from his cellphone vidcam as the tornado towers over the stadium in Tuscaloosa, Oklahoma:

The Associated Press reports:
PLEASANT GROVE, Ala. (AP) -- Dozens of tornadoes spawned by a powerful storm system wiped out neighborhoods across a wide swath of the South, killing at least 201 people in the deadliest outbreak in nearly 40 years, and officials said Thursday they expected the death toll to rise.

Alabama's state emergency management agency said it had confirmed 131 deaths, while there were 32 in Mississippi, 16 in Tennessee, 13 in Georgia, eight in Virginia and one in Kentucky.

The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said it received 137 tornado reports around the regions into Wednesday night."We were in the bathroom holding on to each other and holding on to dear life," said Samantha Nail, who lives in a blue-collar subdivision in the Birmingham suburb of Pleasant Grove where the storm slammed heavy pickup trucks into ditches and obliterated tidy brick houses, leaving behind a mess of mattresses, electronics and children's toys scattered across a grassy plain where dozens used to live. "If it wasn't for our concrete walls, our home would be gone like the rest of them."

Dave Imy, a meteorologist with the prediction service, said the deaths were the most in a tornado outbreak since 1974, when 315 people died.

In Alabama, where as many as a million people were without power, Gov. Robert Bentley said 2,000 national guard troops had been activated and were helping to search devastated areas for people still missing. He said the National Weather Service and forecasters did a good job of alerting people, but there is only so much that can be done to deal with powerful tornadoes a mile wide.

One of the hardest-hit areas was Tuscaloosa, a city of more than 83,000 and home to the University of Alabama. A massive tornado, caught on video by a news camera on a tower, barreled through late Wednesday afternoon, leveling the city.

Obama's Birth Certificate a Scam?

First of all, I want to apologize for accepting anything this administration ever offered as being honest or true. I don't know what came over me! Now, I don't consider myself a "birther", but either there are some elaborate hoaxes making the rounds, or this certificate is a phony as a three dollar bill.

The Honolulu Advertiser posted these Hawaiian birth certificates last July. Note both the dates and the file number in the upper right hand corner. (Click here for larger image)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

According to these, the children were born Aug. 5th, 1961 and were file numbers 61 10637 and 61 10638. So, Barack was born one day earlier, his birth was recorded three days earlier than the twins, and his file number was 10641... three numbers higher than theirs? Don't most government agencies record things sequentially?

Why can't we take anything from this guy at face value? To me, this just raises more questions about what someone might be trying to hide.

President Obama's Long Form Birth Certificate

President Obama made a curious statement today about the release of his birth certificate:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

"We do not have time for this kind of silliness. We’ve got better stuff to do. I’ve got better stuff to do"
-Barack Obama

Doesn't have time for this silliness? So, when the Clinton campaign brought up the question three years ago, you had time for silliness, then? Or in 2009, when you became ostensibly the most powerful man on the planet, you couldn't delegate the job to some one who worked for you? A Birth Certificate Czar, maybe? How long would it have taken, actually?

"Have my press secretary get a copy of my birth certificate and release it to the press." 30 Seconds? Maybe another 30 seconds if he had to sign a form? Less time than a hole of golf, I should imagine. How many holes have you played since you took office, Barry? Thirteen hundred?

I don't have time for silliness. I need to appear on Oprah! And then, I have more fund raisers!

Yeah. Right!

Staff Sergeant Jon R. Cavaiani

Citation:

S/Sgt. Cavaiani distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty in action in the Republic of Vietnam on 4 and 5 June 1971 while serving as a platoon leader to a security platoon providing security for an isolated radio relay site located within enemy-held territory. On the morning of 4 June 1971, the entire camp came under an intense barrage of enemy small arms, automatic weapons, rocket-propelled grenade and mortar fire from a superior size enemy force. S/Sgt. Cavaiani acted with complete disregard for his personal safety as he repeatedly exposed himself to heavy enemy fire in order to move about the camp's perimeter directing the platoon's fire and rallying the platoon in a desperate fight for survival. S/Sgt. Cavaiani also returned heavy suppressive fire upon the assaulting enemy force during this period with a variety of weapons. When the entire platoon was to be evacuated, S/Sgt. Cavaiani unhesitatingly volunteered to remain on the ground and direct the helicopters into the landing zone. S/Sgt. Cavaiani was able to direct the first 3 helicopters in evacuating a major portion of the platoon. Due to intense increase in enemy fire, S/Sgt. Cavaiani was forced to remain at the camp overnight where he calmly directed the remaining platoon members in strengthening their defenses. On the morning of S June, a heavy ground fog restricted visibility. The superior size enemy force launched a major ground attack in an attempt to completely annihilate the remaining small force. The enemy force advanced in 2 ranks, first firing a heavy volume of small arms automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenade fire while the second rank continuously threw a steady barrage of hand grenades at the beleaguered force. S/Sgt. Cavaiani returned a heavy barrage of small arms and hand grenade fire on the assaulting enemy force but was unable to slow them down. He ordered the remaining platoon members to attempt to escape while he provided them with cover fire. With 1 last courageous exertion, S/Sgt. Cavaiani recovered a machinegun, stood up, completely exposing himself to the heavy enemy fire directed at him, and began firing the machinegun in a sweeping motion along the 2 ranks of advancing enemy soldiers. Through S/Sgt. Cavaiani's valiant efforts with complete disregard for his safety, the majority of the remaining platoon members were able to escape. While inflicting severe losses on the advancing enemy force, S/Sgt. Cavaiani was wounded numerous times. S/Sgt. Cavaiani's conspicuous gallantry, extraordinary heroism and intrepidity at the risk of his life, above and beyond the call of duty, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the U.S. Army.

S/Sgt. Cavaiani: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

Wow! Obama's Official Long-Form Birth Certificate

by the Left Coast Rebel

As Sam Foster wrote early this morning, the White House just released Obama's official "long-form" birth certificate. Sam had a great take on the issue in that the Obama birth certificate issue has actually been the longest running Clinton scandal. Proof also gives his readers a head's up below this post.

Nevertheless, the question for me -- given the ease at which the White House got their grubby paws on and released the long-form birth certificate -- is what gives and why didn't they do this before?

I smell a thick trail of rank incompetence and William Jacobson agrees:
The ease with which the White House obtained the documents demonstrates the rank idiocy of the mainstream media, which has been feeding us a steady stream of excuses as to why Obama could not obtain the document.
Professor Jacobson is on to something here: the media-led frantic discussion on Obama's m.i.a. long-form birth certificate proves just how idiotic they are. And, they played right into the publicity whore Donald Trump's hand, giving him tens of millions of dollars of free promotion and airtime (but it was entertaining to watch him use the fools in the press as he did).

We can all breathe a deep sigh of relief and bask in the glory of today's historic moment, gather together and rejoice that everything is back to normal.

America -- he actually is one of us -- even though he hates our freedoms, founding principles, rich people, is bankrupting the nation, is surrounded by communists and czars, had communist parents and a communist childhood mentor, was a racist/socialist agitator crony in Chicago, attended and had his daughters baptized in a church that taught Marxist Black Liberation Theology, taught Alinksy's Rules for Radicals, declared his candidacy in the home of a domestic terrorist...(just to name a few).

And there you have it! America is now the place that I knew in my youth...

Teenage-faced useful idiot for the far-left cause
WaPo's Ezra Klein: in it so deep that rubber
galoshes are required

by the Left Coast Rebel

Via. Newsbusters:

Liberals are always trying to place themselves in the center. Washington Post business columnist Ezra Klein tried out the old saw on Tuesday that just as Bill Clinton described himself pejoratively as an “Eisenhower Republican,” Barack Obama isn’t a socialist, he’s a moderate Republican of the George H.W. Bush era:

Perhaps this is just the logical endpoint of two years spent arguing over what Barack Obama is — or isn’t. Muslim. Socialist. Marxist. Anti-colonialist. Racial healer. We’ve obsessed over every answer except the right one: President Obama, if you look closely at his positions, is a moderate Republican of the early 1990s. And the Republican Party he’s facing has abandoned many of its best ideas in its effort to oppose him.

If you put aside the emergency measures required by the financial crisis, three major policy ideas have dominated American politics in recent years: a plan that uses an individual mandate and tax subsidies to achieve near-universal health care; a cap-and-trade plan that attempts to raise the prices of environmental pollutants to better account for their costs; and bringing tax rates up from their Bush-era lows as part of a bid to reduce the deficit. In each case, the position that Obama and the Democrats have staked out is the very position that moderate Republicans have staked out before.

Klein has a huge “but” in this theory – if you leave out the massive stimulus program and TARP and taking over the auto industry, he’s not a socialist.

Ezra Klein (pictured in true form at the top of this post) has thrown down the gauntlet and gotten his useful-idiot marching orders to spread this "moderate" meme but like anything out of the press these days concerning Obama, the fiction is stranger than the truth.

In all fairness, Obama's undying affection for bankrupting debt, unpaid wars, bailouts et al. just throws steroids and jet fuel on top of the legacy of another: the disaster that we are in the midst of began in earnest under the profligate-presidency of George W. Bush (who was anything but a conservative or a moderate, but in actuality a big-government progressive himself).

But Obama The Moderate?

That's just the darndest-stupid thing I have read in a while, defies any semblance of logic, and is something only capable of a liberal academic head-in-the-sand type!

Ezra Klein was the teen-aged smiling face of Journolister (the 400+ press-only club that secretly got together to figure out how to trash the right and help elect Obama, among other things), so it figures that he is pushing this right now.

It's a not-so-subtle way of him saying, "hey, look, independents and swing voters, Obama's really not a far-left, South American-esque, saber-rattling class warrior!"

Will it work?

Five Years, Four Billion Dollars Later, EPA Tells Shell: Don't Drill

Just how serious is the Obama Administration about reducing energy costs and reducing our dependence on foreign oil?

Shell Oil Company has announced it must scrap efforts to drill for oil this summer in the Arctic Ocean off the northern coast of Alaska. The decision comes following a ruling by the EPA’s Environmental Appeals Board to withhold critical air permits. The move has angered some in Congress and triggered a flurry of legislation aimed at stripping the EPA of its oil drilling oversight.

Shell has spent five years and nearly $4 billion dollars on plans to explore for oil in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. The leases alone cost $2.2 billion. Shell Vice President Pete Slaiby says obtaining similar air permits for a drilling operation in the Gulf of Mexico would take about 45 days. He’s especially frustrated over the appeal board’s suggestion that the Arctic drill would somehow be hazardous for the people who live in the area. “We think the issues were really not major,” Slaiby said, “and clearly not impactful for the communities we work in.”

What kind of hazard to people just how close?

The closest village to where Shell proposed to drill is Kaktovik, Alaska. It is one of the most remote places in the United States. According to the latest census, the population is 245 and nearly all of the residents are Alaska natives. The village, which is 1 square mile, sits right along the shores of the Beaufort Sea, 70 miles away from the proposed off-shore drill site.

The EPA’s appeals board ruled that Shell had not taken into consideration emissions from an ice-breaking vessel when calculating overall greenhouse gas emissions from the project. Environmental groups were thrilled by the ruling.

Let me get this straight...245 people, seventy miles away might be put at hazard because an icebreaker wasn't taken into consideration in the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions? How about we shut down every freeway within seventy miles of any population of two hundred or more, because an extra tractor trailer or two might add to carbon emissions there! This is an incredible exhibition of abuse of federal power. Life is not zero emissions. It's time for the EPA to come to grips with the real world. Congress should take note and curtail the EPA. Voters should take note and curtail the politicians who allow such abuses to take place.

And when the demagogues tell you what obscene profits the oil companies are making (less in percentage than the taxes on a gallon of gas), ask them how the oil companies should handle multi-billion dollar losses imposed on them by arbitrary regulations from the federal government?

I'm sure they'll have a logical response!

The Campaign Not to Re-elect Obama

You see their signs everywhere!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Something Rush said on his show today, about every gas sign being an ad for the Republicans: "Don't re-elect Obama". I can see it!

Updated per LCR: Extremely pertinent thread at Memeorandum, per The Washington Post:

Soaring gasoline prices are biting into household incomes and nibbling at Americans’ fuel consumption — and support for President Obama, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll.

About six in 10 respondents said they had cut back on driving because of rising fuel prices, and seven in 10 said that high pump prices are causing financial hardship. Obama, like previous presidents in times of high oil prices, is taking a hit. Only 39 percent of those who call gas prices a “serious financial hardship” approve of the way he is doing his job, and 33 percent of them say he’s doing a good job on the economy.

Go figure. Like everything else going on right now, Obama has no clue (unless it is something that advances the socialist-progressive agenda, trillions in debt and added centralization of power in Washington DC). Of course gas prices have everything to do with the Fed's mismanagement = inflation and nothing to do with "speculators" but that doesn't stop 'O' from hitting that easy target with the only weapon he has: useless rhetoric.

California Welfare: It's Worse Than You Think

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

My friend, the Left Coast Rebel, has an excellent article below, on the mess that is California and the slippery slope the politicians keep greasing. The only trouble with the Rebel's article is: It's even worse than that.

In talking about the Food Stamp mess, first we might note that the politicians have renamed it last October, to get rid of some of that nasty stigma.
The new name? CalFresh

"This rebranding campaign will go a long way in helping to erase the unfortunate stigma associated with this program and encourage families to seek CalFresh as a resource for putting healthy meals on their table,"
-First Lady Maria Shriver

And well they should. Back when the government printed the food coupons, the next person in line could see what you were using. I remember an incident from over thirty years ago. It was the mid seventies, I had just bought my first house, (for fewer dollars than my current car, but the devaluation of the dollar is another story!), at a time when it was suggested that your mortgage payment be no more than 25% of your gross income. Mine was about 33% of my take home, so let's just say times were tight!

I was in the grocery store, buying some sliced bologna for my brown bag lunches. The guy in front of me in the line was a healthy looking, burly fellow, and I noticed that he had just bought two of the biggest t-bone steaks I had ever seen. And he had junk food and dog food and beer, and the checker told him he couldn't pay for the dog food or the beer with food stamps. (Sorry, Fido. Get a job!) So the gentleman proceeds to pull a roll of bills out of his pocket that would have choked a horse, peeled off a couple of fifty dollar bills and paid for the non-covered items.

You will forgive me, if in a moment of weakness looking at those steaks, pondering the tastiness of my lunchmeat, if it didn't at least cross my mind that maybe this guy didn't really qualify for foodstamps?

So, now that stigma has been taken away. Instead of a printed food coupon or stamp, the recipients receive what amounts to a debit card they swipe through the machine at the grocery. Much harder to see at a glance how the person in front of you is paying, so no one can tell who's using them. And in itself, that's not a bad thing. This is: the EBT (electronic benefit transfer) cards, as they are called have not been allowed to be used for alcohol or cigarettes, but they could be used for cash! In other words, the person goes through the line, pays for the allowable groceries and then asks for cash back, which they could then spend on literally anything.

In fact, last June, a small scandal revealed that the EBT cards were being used to withdraw cash in California casinos!

California welfare recipients are able to use state-issued debit cards to withdraw cash on gaming floors in more than half of the casinos in the state, a Los Angeles Times review of records found.

The cards, provided by the Department of Social Services to help recipients feed and clothe their families, work in automated teller machines at 32 of 58 tribal casinos and 47 of 90 state-licensed poker rooms, the review found.

So, add gambling to the alcohol and cigarettes we provide welfare recipients in California. Add to that the irony that the state is spending literally millions of dollars to convince Californians not to smoke, while they are subsidizing tobacco products for the poor, the people who are statistically most likely to smoke. Go figure.

California Handing out Money for Booze and Cigs: One News Story that sums up the Entire Welfare State Disaster

California: A beautiful place destroyed by socialism

by the Left Coast Rebel

I hate to admit this but for the most part, I really don't follow California politics any more. Sure, my Once Golden State is a shining rusted-over and decaying example of what liberalism/progressive policy and the entitlement mentality does to a once-thriving society but the argument against further destruction is a useless enterprise. Their comes a day -- as with the parent of a spoiled child -- where one throws up his hands and says ''to hell with it, he has to learn by his own mistakes!"

It's simply disgusting and even more disgusting is that the fools that inhabit this place want more of it because they have yet to pay the price! Remember, there was only one area of the country that didn't say Hell No! to the Obamanation agenda last November.

And you know what? These people vote -- and outnumber productive earners twofold -- and they send fools to Sacramento that think "assistance" dollars should go to those who don't (and in many cases, choose not to) work and instead opt to live the Life of Riley while you and I and the dwindling percentage (a tad over 30% of the population, according to the 2010 Census) that work here haven't yet fled and pick up the tab with the highest taxes and lowest quality of life to show for it in the entire nation! (sighing as I catch my breath).

Good news, though: The Life of Riley now officially includes a taxpayer-supported buzz:

On a straight party-line vote California lawmakers gave the green light for welfare recipients to purchase alcohol and tobacco products using taxpayer money. The insanity in the Golden State continues despite the state’s $23 billion deficit and double-digit unemployment.
[…]
The Golden State doles out welfare benefits through the CalWORKS program. In the past welfare recipients were not allowed to buy beer and cigarettes, but compassionate state lawmakers decided it wasn’t fair to stop TAXPAYER money from being used to subsidize non-essential bad habits.

“You would think a simple common sense reform like trying to make sure taxpayer money is not used for the purchase of alcohol and tobacco would find bi-partisan support,” said GOP State Senator Bob Dutton.

No such luck in California, Dutton, SB417’s sponsor saw his legislation to save taxpayer money fail on a straight party-line vote.
[…]
“These funds are designed help the neediest in California meet their basic requirements of providing food, clothing and shelter,” Senator Dutton quipped. “I doubt there’s not a taxpayer in this state who believes purchasing alcohol or tobacco with welfare money constitutes a basic need and should be allowed.”

Senator Dutton also explained that more than half of welfare beneficiaries are parents who are no longer eligible for state aid, but still receive cash assistance on behalf of their anchor baby children.

What's next? Food stamps for medical marijuana?

Love him or hate him, Ron Paul has been warning Americans of incrementalism like this for decades: government programs (like welfare, assistance, food stamps, et al.) start out with "noble" intentions but end up becoming a beast that devours the individual soul, creates giant swaths of dependant classes, squeezes creative, productive earners and eventually creates the precise opposite of the purported intended consequence.

In other words: welfare checks paying for booze and cigs, rubber-stamped by statist fools in Sacramento.

California is the nation's canary in the coal mine and the White House is inhabited by moonbats that think the Once Golden State model is the model for the nation.

Happy 400th, King James Bible!

I wasn't sure which day would be best to post it, but 2011 is the 400th anniversary of the publication of the "King James" Bible, and Easter Sunday is probably as good a day as any! I bought a facsimile edition some years back, which will give you some idea of what was new four hundred years ago:

(VIDEO) St. Louis, Missouri Tornado 2011, Lambert Airport Security Video

by the Left Coast Rebel

From RT:
Security cameras video released by Lambert Airport shows dramatic pictures of the tornado that hit St. Louis on Friday. The airport reopened on Saturday night for a handful of arriving flights, and officials expected around 70 percent of the scheduled arrivals and departures to go on as planned early on Sunday. Some 750 homes in the St. Louis region were damaged, and less than 100 were uninhabitable, by the 128 kilometres per hour (80 miles per hour) tornado, officials said.

Updated: This ain't Kansas any more!

YouTube video of people in the airport watching the storm (some laughing at the scene), and then being rushed to take cover inside the Terminal 2 at Lambert Airport:

Scary stuff and shocking that no one was killed.

Proof and I here in California may have to contend with earthquakes and apocalyptic wildfires but at least we don't deal with anything like this!

"Of the Father's Love Begotten"

Of the Father's love begotten, ere the worlds began to be,
He is Alpha and Omega, He the source, the ending He,
Of the things that are, that have been,
And that future years shall see, evermore and evermore!

At His Word the worlds were framed; He commanded, it was done:
Heaven and earth and depths of ocean in their threefold order one;
All that grows beneath the shining
Of the moon and burning sun, evermore and evermore!

O that birth forever blessed, when the virgin, full of grace,
By the Holy Ghost conceiving, bare the Savior of our race;
And the Babe, the worlds Redeemer,
First revealed His sacred face, evermore and evermore!

This is He Whom seers in old time chanted of with one accord;
Whom the voices of the prophets promised in their faithful word;
Now He shines, the long expected,
Let creation praise its Lord, evermore and evermore!

O ye heights of heaven adore Him; angel hosts, His praises sing;
Powers, dominions, bow before Him, and extol our God and King!
Let no tongue on earth be silent,
Every voice in concert sing, evermore and evermore!

Christ, to Thee with God the Father, and, O Holy Ghost, to Thee,
Hymn and chant with high thanksgiving, and unwearied praises be:
Honor, glory, and dominion,
And eternal victory, evermore and evermore!

C. S. Lewis on the Claims of Christ

In the providence of God, I just so happen to be having a small theological discussion on another forum with a fellow whom I reckon goes to church about as often as my cat sings opera. So, I guess Easter Sunday is as good a time as any to quote that great, Christian apologist C.S. Lewis:

"I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to."
— C.S. Lewis (Mere Christianity)

Obama: The Mindset of a Marxist

Their (Republicans) basic view is that no matter how successful I am, no matter how much I've taken from this country... I wasn't born wealthy. I was raised by a single mom and my grandparents. I went to college on scholarships. There was a time when my mom was trying to get her Ph.D. where, for a short time, she had to take food stamps. My grandparents relied on Medicare and Social Security. Their notion is: Despite the fact that I've benefited from all these investments, somehow I now have no obligation to people who are less fortunate than me.

-Barack Obama

So many fallacies, so little time! First he starts: "no matter how much I've taken from this country". Now if he is speaking for himself, he might be referring to the salary he collected as a state senator, voting "present" or his salary as President, considering all the vacations and golf outings since he assumed office.

We won't go into whether or not his mother might have been committing welfare fraud while she was a post grad student, although it seems apparent that Obama was living with his grandparents while this "investment" was taking place. Were the scholarships he used for college publicly or privately funded? The pricey private school his grandparents sent him to was not a government "investment". I received both private and public scholarships when I went to college. Actually, that's not quite true. I qualified for a California State Scholarship, but never used it. I suspect that Obama's scholarships were more private than public. He could release the records, along with his transcripts and prove me wrong. Don't hold your breath waiting.

"My grandparents relied on Medicare and Social Security". This has been debunked elsewhere. His grandmother was vice president of a bank in Hawaii. His grandfather managed a furniture store in Kansas and came to Hawaii for a "better opportunity". They were upper middle class. They sent their grandson to private school. I doubt that they "relied" on Social Security and Medicare to the extent that most people do.

But, if he is building the straw man that Republicans think that everyone who is successful has "taken" something from the country, then he is quite mistaken.

Bill Gates, love him or hate him, did not become successful by "taking" anything from the country. He marketed a computer operating system that people willingly parted with their hard earned money to obtain. Other than its freedom and opportunity, what did Bill Gates "take" from America?

Can we cut through some of the clutter? Shorter Obama:
Their (Republicans) basic view is that no matter how successful I am... somehow I now have no obligation to people who are less fortunate than me.

Where in the world would you get such a preposterous statement that people who pay their taxes (and whose charitable giving far exceeds those of Democrats and other liberals) believe they have "no obligation" to the less fortunate?

It is true, that in the face of overwhelmingly massive deficits, Republicans are trying to cut back on non-essential spending. According to Obama and his fellow libs, there is no government program so bloated or wasteful or a duplication of other agencies, that it can be cut. It is demagoguery of the worst sort to say that any cut in the federal budget will starve seniors and children. Are there no programs in the entire federal budget (other than the military, which the libs would love to savage), which liberals would cut before programs for seniors or the poor?

And the problems of Social Security and Medicare, among others, have been demagogued for so many years, they are long overdue for reform just to remain solvent. To allow those programs to collapse of their own weight in the near future is far more dastardly than trying to correct them today.

And can we look at how Obama describes entitlement programs? "Investments". I can remember my dear sainted mother talking about how she was going to "invest" in some new curtains for the house. Was she getting it ready to sell? No. It just made "spending money" more palatable is she called it "an investment". Beware the individual who wants to take a lot of your money by calling things that are not an investment, an "investment".

What is the "return" on Obama's investments"? From wiki:
Investment is putting money into something with the expectation of profit. More specifically, investment is the commitment of money or capital to the purchase of financial instruments or other assets so as to gain profitable returns in the form of interest, dividends, or appreciation of the value of the instrument (capital gains).[1] It is related to saving or deferring consumption.

Does everyone on food stamps go on to be President? Does everyone on food stamps even go on to be a productive member of society? Not necessarily. Support for the less fortunate is an expense. It is a compassionate expense, but it is not an "investment". If you believe, as Obama appears to, that feeding the poor is an "investment", next time you go shopping for groceries, tell everyone how you "invested" in a dozen eggs and a box of Fruit Loops. How you thought of "investing" in a bunch of bananas, but they looked a little green.

Just like his "kinetic military action", good liberals find that they can persuade you better, if they either change the words they use to describe things, or use the same words, but give them different meanings.

1984 was apparently the liberal's "hornbook".
