In for a Penne, In for a Pounding

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Barilla CEO Guido Barilla

By now, you may have heard something about the proposed boycott of Barilla pasta, by members of the LGBT community for his supposed "homophobia".
Barilla pasta empire CEO, Guido Barilla, released a video today (9/27) apologizing again to the gay community for saying the other day, among other things, that he would never put a gay family in an ad for his pasta because the Barilla company likes “traditional families.”

First of all, the word "homophobia" is a misnomer. A phobia is an irrational fear. The word homophobia was coined by activists who wanted to intimidate and silence those who disagreed with them, politically or otherwise, but "fear" had nothing to do with it, and it certainly wasn't "irrational".

Let's look at a translation of the statement that got poor Guido into trouble in the first place:

"We will not be advertising with homosexuals, because we like the traditional family. If gays do not agree, they can always eat pasta from another manufacturer. All are free to do whatever they want provided it does not annoy others. "
-source: Google Translate

Note the language: "We will not be advertising with homosexuals". Now, notice how he is misquoted in the following graphic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

"I would never use (emphasis mine) a gay family in our commercial". Note both the use of direct quotes and the word "never". I'm no expert in Italian, but comparing the Google translation and one other translation I've seen, the word "never" seems more like editorializing than a direct quote. Other than satire, if one characterized his statement as, "I'll use gays in the company advertising when they pry the company from my cold, dead fingers", it would be dishonest to attribute that to him as a direct quote.

So, CEO Barilla wandered into a PC minefield here, during a radio interview. Signore Barilla is not opposed to gay marriage, but draws a line at gay adoption. I'm sure he thought his "live and let live" disclaimer, "All are free to do whatever they want provided it does not annoy others", reflected an open minded approach on his part to "diversity".

When I began to ponder this kerfluffle, I thought of it in terms of those who are perpetually offended. Barilla is not opposed to gay marriage, but does not see it as an ideal. Most likely, his religious and or cultural upbringing provided a basis for his beliefs. So, initially, I was thinking of this in terms of the rights of an individual to hold certain beliefs and to have those beliefs reflected in the businesses they create and run. Does this make Barilla a bigot? Is it fair to characterize his products as "Bigottoni"?

And then, I tried to think of any other advertiser who used gay couples or gay families in their ad campaigns, and I couldn't think of any. None. I Googled "gay advertising", and I saw one or two ads by national companies, but didn't remember them as being part of a national ad campaign. It's very "progressive" to demonstrate your "diversity" in small, limited and tailored markets, don'tcha know? How many millions of companies worldwide, have a de facto or de jure policy exactly the same as Signore Barilla's, but have simply never made the mistake of saying it out loud??

Forgive me for saying so, but I don't think bigotry has anything to do with it. If five or ten years from now*, a demographic study came out that demonstrated that LGBT couples were the largest buyers or potential buyers for their products, that advertising trends would reflect that demographic. Follow the money.

Secondly, might there be a question as to whether gays would really want full equality in advertising. Consider the memes and stereotypes that are dominant in today's advertising culture: In the past few decades, in heterosexual households featured in advertising, Dad has become kind of a doofus. And clueless. Sometimes, a clueless doofus, saved from his cluelessness by a much smarter mate. Father once knew best, but not anymore! Following the same pattern, can you see commercials depicting 50% of gays as clueless doofuses? Congratulations! Gays now have the equality to be depicted on TV as really, really stupid people! I wouldn't want to be the guy to make that pitch!

Aren't there any companies owned by gays or progressives, (or gay progressives) who will lead the way? Doesn't it seem just a bit hypocritical to criticize a man who grew up in a traditional heterosexual family, who believes traditional family values, when there are no progressive companies blazing that trail of marketing their product using gay families?

When I see the first Super Bowl ad, depicting two gay men smootching it up and proclaiming their domestic bliss as they sip their wine cooler (I warned you about stereotypes!) or beer and proclaim, "It doesn't get any better than this", then, let's jump all over poor benighted Guido Barilla for his less than PC take on marriage and the family. In the meantime, how can we hold him to a higher standard than those who advocate the LGBT agenda but refuse to put their own advertising dollars where their mouths are?

*Is it bigoted of me to say it could take five to ten years? Or more?? Or never??? Just my take on the Zeitgeist, but then, I didn't anticipate the iphone or an Obama re-election, either, so take it with a grain of salt.

Portrait of John Cox under the benevolent eye of his new editor.

Many of you are familiar with the very talented artist John Cox. And to think, I have to thank Harry Reid for the events leading up to John becoming a contributor here!

Last week, I started corresponding with John after seeing a portrait he'd done of Senate majority leader Harry Reid. After Reid repeatedly made the slanderous accusations about the tea party being anarchists, my blood started to boil, and I asked John if I could use his portrait of Reid to illustrate my post, Harry Reid is an Ignorant Fascist With Stinky Feet* .

Shortly after, John suggested a collaboration, where he might illustrate some of my future posts or do caricatures of obscure folk that I might have occasion to write about. I took a step beyond that and invited John to become a contributor to the blog and contribute whatever pieces past, present or future, that he would like to share with this audience.

Have I mentioned yet that this is Too. Freaking. Cool? I'm a big fan of John's and I think many of you will become fans, as well, if you aren't already. Be sure to visit John at his own blog, too, John Cox Art. Some of it's political, some of it's humorous. Some of it is just art for art's sake! (Yeah, I know. What a hippie!)

Welcome aboard, John! Make yourself at home! I am indeed looking forward to collaborating with you.

Note to my readers: I had originally scheduled this for 8AM Eastern, but, face it! It was just Too. Freaking. Cool. And some of you were losing patience (and you know who you are!)

The United States is a hard-working, patriotic country with a talented work force and a political system that can generate policy and govern and lead effectively. Unless the environmentalist extremists who predicted that by now Manhattan would be underwater, the average temperature in Toronto in February would be 20 centigrade, and that we would all be gasping for oxygen, find richer electoral sugar daddies than the oil industry and get political control of that country (almost impossible), the United States will be self-sufficient in energy in a few years.

We understand, however, that in Russia today, the rule of law is easily ignored and that you've managed to stay in power since 2000, even though your country's original constitution supposedly limited you to two consecutive terms. Harry Reid is an Ignorant Fascist With Stinky Feet*

*According to the Harry Reid School of logic and reasoning. (Stop laughing!)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Fascist is a very precise term that describes a certain sort of person. How can I state with certainty that "Harry Reid is an Ignorant Fascist With Stinky Feet", when I've never been within twenty feet of his feet? It's quite simple really (much like Harry)! Whenever you want to call your opponent names, you pick out a word that sounds bad and then presume it means whatever you want it to mean. In other words, the Humpty Dumpty school of Rhetoric.

Harry Reid, the Dimbulb from Searchlight, said the following:
"We're not going to bow to tea-party anarchists who deny the mere fact that Obamacare is the law. We will not bow to tea-party anarchists who refuse to accept that the Supreme Court ruled that Obamacare is constitutional."

Which is funny, on the face of it, since Obama is the one known for bowing to petty tyrants and monarchs around the globe. But, lets take an honest look at his dishonest use of the word "anarchists". A dictionary definition to start?

an·ar·chist [an-er-kist]
noun
1. a person who advocates or believes in anarchy or anarchism.
2. a person who seeks to overturn by violence all constituted forms and institutions of society and government, with no purpose of establishing any other system of order in the place of that destroyed.
3. a person who promotes disorder or excites revolt against any established rule, law, or custom.

Definition one: Does the tea party, organized or otherwise believe in or advocate anarchy? Of course not! In order to believe that, you'd have to be delusional enough to believe that Harry Reid is competent, or that Obamacare would lower the insurance premium of a family of four by $2,500 a year, instead of increasing it $7,500.

Definition two: Why would Senator Cruz seek to filibuster the Senate, if the tea party "seeks to overturn by violence all constituted forms and institutions of society and government". Can Senator Dimbulb Reid point to any instance of the tea party seeking to overturn by violence ALL constituted forms and institutions of society and government? That sounds more like his friends in the Occupy movement. The tea party seeks to re-establish the preeminence of the Constitution and the return to a true Constitutional Republic, which, the last time I looked, was an institution of society and government. Maybe Harry should stick to things he knows about, like government subsidies for cowboy poetry.

Definition three comes closest to a fig leaf for poor Harry, if you used "promotes disorder or excites revolt" very, very loosely. And one could argue that Obamacare is an "established" law, even though the Executive branch picks and chooses which parts of the law to implement and enforce and which parts of the law it chooses to ignore. Hmm. Wonder what the definition of "people who ignore laws" is?

But, even if by tortuous definition one were to equate the opposition of one law with the opposition of all law and order, may we look at the consistency of Mr. Harry Pencilneck Geek Reid?

Throughout the history of our nation, there have been those who opposed slavery. Slavery was the established law of the land for the first century of our nation's founding. Were those who opposed slavery "anarchists", Mr. Reid?

"Jim Crow" laws were established in the South, Mr. Reid. Were those who opposed Jim Crow "anarchists", Mr. Reid?

The law of the land denied women's suffrage. (That means they couldn't vote, Harry.) Were those people who advocated women's suffrage "anarchists", Mr. Reid?

How about gay marriage? Child labor?? Roe v. Wade??? In the dim recesses of whatever passes for your mind, is everyone who has ever advocated for a law to be changed, an "anarchist"????

Why the people of Nevada consistently return such a dim witted fool such as yourself to public office is a bit of a mystery and more than a little bit an American tragedy. The fact that you are the leader of the Senate which your party controls speaks volumes as to how low their standards actually are.

I am willing to admit that I might be wrong in my assessment. Your feet may not stink at all. Your record as a "public servant", however, does.

Lieutenant Colonel Leo K. Thorsness

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. As pilot of an F- 105 aircraft, Lt. Col. Thorsness was on a surface-to-air missile suppression mission over North Vietnam. Lt. Col. Thorsness and his wingman attacked and silenced a surface-to-air missile site with air-to-ground missiles, and then destroyed a second surface-to-air missile site with bombs.
In tile attack on the second missile site, Lt. Col. Thorsness' wingman was shot down by intensive antiaircraft fire, and the 2 crewmembers abandoned their aircraft. Lt. Col. Thorsness circled the descending parachutes to keep the crewmembers in sight and relay their position to the Search and Rescue Center. During this maneuver, a MIG-17 was sighted in the area. Lt. Col. Thorsness immediately initiated an attack and destroyed the MIG. Because his aircraft was low on fuel, he was forced to depart the area in search of a tanker.
Upon being advised that 2 helicopters were orbiting over the downed crew's position and that there were hostile MlGs in the area posing a serious threat to the helicopters, Lt. Col. Thorsness, despite his low fuel condition, decided to return alone through a hostile environment of surface-to-air missile and antiaircraft defenses to the downed crew's position. As he approached the area, he spotted 4 MIG-17 aircraft and immediately initiated an attack on the MlGs, damaging 1 and driving the others away from the rescue scene. When it became apparent that an aircraft in the area was critically low on fuel and the crew would have to abandon the aircraft unless they could reach a tanker, Lt. Col. Thorsness, although critically short on fuel himself, helped to avert further possible loss of life and a friendly aircraft by recovering at a forward operating base, thus allowing the aircraft in emergency fuel condition to refuel safely.
Lt. Col. Thorsness' extraordinary heroism, self-sacrifice, and personal bravery involving conspicuous risk of life were in the highest traditions of the military service, and have reflected great credit upon himself and the U.S. Air Force.

Lt. Col. Thorsness: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

Random Thoughts

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Listening to the Sunday shows this AM, heard what has to be the talking point to try to spin Obama's inept and ineffectual handling of the Syrian crisis. Twice, on Fox News Sunday, I heard Democrats talking about how Putin was "moving the ball" on Obama's Syria plan. Horse feathers! After rattling his rubber saber at Syria for the last year, drawing imaginary lines that he had no plan, intention or clue as to how to back up his empty rhetoric, Obama is not in charge, as his flunkies would like to have you believe.

To use a football analogy, they imply that the plan to deal with Syria was Obama's, the quarterback, and Putin is the running back to whom Obama handed the ball. Team effort, but Obama calls the shots. (Hard a hard time writing that with a straight face!) Putin is indeed moving the ball quickly, but more like Rick McKee's cartoon above. Or a fumble recovery by Putin, after Obama and Kerry fumbled the ball. And that's if you concede that Obama is even on the field. He may have more in common with the crazy fan in the end zone, wagging his foam finger, taking credit for how well "his" team is doing.

Again, if the crazy guy in the end zone, with his face painted in team colors, asks you out for a drink after the game, you have to think of your reputation if someone sees you with him!

In keeping with Marvel's penchant for a brief clip of coming attractions, the good news is, they're not making you wait for the absolute end of the credits here. As my mentor Pogo once said, "I have seen the enemy and it is us;" except, in this case, the enemy is poor punctuation. Yes, and we are all guilty. Rich has no higher ground because of being a Marine Officer, I corrected many pages for officers and wondered how they ever wrote papers in college. Without punctuation, a sentence can be interpreted in a number of ways. Correct punctuation insures a greater accuracy and fewer chances for misinterpretation. In other words, correct punctuation is a tight group on the 500 yard line: punctuation leaves holes all over your target and your neighbor's target. We all need to tighten our groups on the grammar range or we will have more misfires over nothing.

Fifty-three weeks ago when four Americans were murdered by terrorists in Benghazi, Obama appeared after a good night's sleep, bemoaned the loss, vowed to deliver justice to the killers (still unfulfilled), then flew off for fundraising parties in Las Vegas. Hey, they're still dead anyway, and there was big campaign money waiting.

When a 133-foot-tall wall of tsunami water rolled 10 miles inland to kill 16,000 in Japan two years ago, Obama expressed his sorrow, then went golfing. When bad weather canceled his trip to the funeral of Poland's president, Obama paid his respects by golfing. As the Gulf coast economy struggled back from the nation's worst environmental disaster ever, Obama urged all Americans to vacation there. Then, he took his family to the New England coast.

Or our personal fave, his 2012 Virginia campaign speech when the audience began fainting from the heat. So, instead of cutting it short, Obama offered advice on hydration and how to stand properly until he was finished.

Lieutenant (then Petty Officer) Michael Edwin Thornton

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while participating in a daring operation against enemy forces. PO Thornton, as Assistant U.S. Navy Advisor, along with a U.S. Navy lieutenant serving as Senior Advisor, accompanied a 3-man Vietnamese Navy SEAL patrol on an intelligence gathering and prisoner capture operation against an enemy-occupied naval river base. Launched from a Vietnamese Navy junk in a rubber boat, the patrol reached land and was continuing on foot toward its objective when it suddenly came under heavy fire from a numerically superior force. The patrol called in naval gunfire support and then engaged the enemy in a fierce firefight, accounting for many enemy casualties before moving back to the waterline to prevent encirclement. Upon learning that the Senior Advisor had been hit by enemy fire and was believed to be dead, PO Thornton returned through a hail of fire to the lieutenant's last position; quickly disposed of 2 enemy soldiers about to overrun the position, and succeeded in removing the seriously wounded and unconscious Senior Naval Advisor to the water's edge. He then inflated the lieutenant's lifejacket and towed him seaward for approximately 2 hours until picked up by support craft. By his extraordinary courage and perseverance, PO Thornton was directly responsible for saving the life of his superior officer and enabling the safe extraction of all patrol members, thereby upholding the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

Lieutenant Thornton: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

Hat tip Home of Heroes

There are fewer than a hundred living MoH recipients today. Their names and their stories should not be forgotten. My mission is to honor one of those heroes here each week, and salute them for their courage and sacrifice. In the words of John Fitzgerald Kennedy:

“A nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces, but also by the men it honors; the men it remembers.”
