Quote du Jour

This compulsion to attack his predecessor is as stale as it is unseemly. Obama was elected a year ago. He became commander in chief two months later. He then solemnly announced his own “comprehensive new strategy” for Afghanistan seven months ago. And it was not an off-the-cuff decision. “My administration has heard from our military commanders, as well as our diplomats,” the president assured us. “We’ve consulted with the Afghan and Pakistani governments, with our partners and our NATO allies, and with other donors and international organizations” and “with members of Congress.”

Obama is obviously unhappy with the path he himself chose in March. Fine. He has every right — indeed, duty — to reconsider. But what Obama is reacting to is the failure of his own strategy.

Wal-Mart Sells Coffins...

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
...on the layaway plan???

Don't look for them on the shelves of your local Wal-Mart store, but Walmart.com is now selling caskets and urns at bargain prices online.

The Associated Press reports that Wal-Mart quietly added these items to its huge online selection last week. And it noted that Costco has been selling caskets and urns online as well. Who knew?

This is great news, we think, because the exorbitant prices charged by funeral homes have been one of our pet peeves for decades. Funeral homes are required by law to accept a casket you buy elsewhere -- and can't charge you extra if you do.

I agree that burial costs are too high and generally come at a time when people's emotions are raw and they could be vulnerable to making poor decisions.

So, will this give liberals more or less reason to hate Wal-Mart?

Verdict in "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" Fatality

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Worth dying for?

Once a year, it seems, you hear a story about alcohol poisoning somewhere where someone tried to drink too much too fast. But, have you ever heard of anyone dying from water intoxication?

A Sacramento radio station had a promotion to win a game system in their "Hold Your Wee for a WII" contest. According to the Smoking Gun:
Jennifer Strange, a 28-year-old mother of three, died on January 12 (2007) after drinking almost two gallons of water while taking part in a giveaway contest sponsored by Sacramento's KDND-FM. The contest awarded a Nintendo console to the person who could avoid urinating (or vomiting) after drinking a large quantity of water.

Today, a verdict was handed down, holding the radio station and its parent company 100% responsible for Strange's negligent death and awarded her family $16.57 million in damages.

Sadly, a caller to the program during the contest, who identified herself as a nurse, tried to warn the on air personalities of the dangers of water intoxication but was ignored.

Specialist Fifth Class Charles Chris Hagemeister

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. While conducting combat operations against a hostile force, Sp5c. Hagemeister's platoon suddenly came under heavy attack from 3 sides by an enemy force occupying well concealed, fortified positions and supported by machineguns and mortars. Seeing 2 of his comrades seriously wounded in the initial action, Sp5c. Hagemeister unhesitatingly and with total disregard for his safety, raced through the deadly hail of enemy fire to provide them medical aid. Upon learning that the platoon leader and several other soldiers also had been wounded, Sp5c. Hagemeister continued to brave the withering enemy fire and crawled forward to render lifesaving treatment and to offer words of encouragement. Attempting to evacuate the seriously wounded soldiers, Sp5c. Hagemeister was taken under fire at close range by an enemy sniper. Realizing that the lives of his fellow soldiers depended on his actions, Sp5c. Hagemeister seized a rifle from a fallen comrade, killed the sniper, 3 other enemy soldiers who were attempting to encircle his position and silenced an enemy machinegun that covered the area with deadly fire. Unable to remove the wounded to a less exposed location and aware of the enemy's efforts to isolate his unit, he dashed through the fusillade of fire to secure help from a nearby platoon. Returning with help, he placed men in positions to cover his advance as he moved to evacuate the wounded forward of his location. These efforts successfully completed, he then moved to the other flank and evacuated additional wounded men despite the fact that his every move drew fire from the enemy. Sp5c. Hagemeister's repeated heroic and selfless actions at the risk of his life saved the lives of many of his comrades and inspired their actions in repelling the enemy assault. Sp5c. Hagemeister's indomitable courage was in the highest traditions of the U.S. Armed Forces and reflect great credit upon himself.

The "Wal-Mart Option"

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Nancy Pelosi thinks that all government run health care needs is a little better PR. She wants to change the name "public option" and call it the "competitive option", despite the fact that , if competition was all the government wanted, it could tear down the barriers keeping hundreds if not thousands of insurance companies from competing across state lines.

And if millions of uninsured were the concern, perhaps some attention could be paid to the billions of dollars currently wasted on Medicare fraud and out of control malpractice costs?

The libs always get their Birkenstocks in a bunch whenever they think of a Wal-Mart coming in and putting mom and pop stores out of business, so, let's call this the "Wal-Mart Option"!

That should sit well with the people back home in Nancy's district, shouldn't it?

Fake Cigarettes? Suck this!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Are you old enough to remember candy cigarettes? Slender white sticks of candy, dyed red on the end, with Red Dye #5, or whatever would send small children into insulin shock, to simulate the glowing tip of the fake cigarette.
Although they are still available through specialty vendors, political correctness spelled their doom decades ago. Have children imitate smokers??? Heaven forbid!

I hadn't thought of these in years, until recently, I've been hearing ads on radio and TV for electronic cigarettes. These smokeless devices produce what is advertised as "nearly odorless" water vapor that one can use to "blow smoke rings".

One TV ad showed that the fake cigarette had a red plastic tip that glowed "like a real cigarette". It was so fake looking, it made me think of the candy. I can't imagine anyone looking cool, puffing on one of these phony electronic cigarettes. I also can't imagine, given the sensitivity of most health Nazis, that this "nearly odorless" vapor would be permitted anywhere that smoking is banned.

But, hey! If you need something to satisfy your oral fixation, knock yourself out! Just be prepared for some good natured snickering at your expense!

Captain Harold A. Fritz

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Capt. (then 1st Lt.) Fritz, Armor, U.S. Army, distinguished himself while serving as a platoon leader with Troop A, near Quan Loi. Capt. Fritz was leading his 7-vehicle armored column along Highway 13 to meet and escort a truck convoy when the column suddenly came under intense crossfire from a reinforced enemy company deployed in ambush positions. In the initial attack, Capt. Fritz' vehicle was hit and he was seriously wounded. Realizing that his platoon was completely surrounded, vastly outnumbered, and in danger of being overrun, Capt. Fritz leaped to the top of his burning vehicle and directed the positioning of his remaining vehicles and men. With complete disregard for his wounds and safety, he ran from vehicle to vehicle in complete view of the enemy gunners in order to reposition his men, to improve the defenses, to assist the wounded, to distribute ammunition, to direct fire, and to provide encouragement to his men. When a strong enemy force assaulted the position and attempted to overrun the platoon, Capt. Fritz manned a machinegun and through his exemplary action inspired his men to deliver intense and deadly fire which broke the assault and routed the attackers. Moments later a second enemy force advanced to within 2 meters of the position and threatened to overwhelm the defenders. Capt. Fritz, armed only with a pistol and bayonet, led a small group of his men in a fierce and daring charge which routed the attackers and inflicted heavy casualties. When a relief force arrived, Capt. Fritz saw that it was not deploying effectively against the enemy positions, and he moved through the heavy enemy fire to direct its deployment against the hostile positions. This deployment forced the enemy to abandon the ambush site and withdraw. Despite his wounds, Capt. Fritz returned to his position, assisted his men, and refused medical attention until all of his wounded comrades had been treated and evacuated. The extraordinary courage and selflessness displayed by Capt. Fritz, at the repeated risk of his own life above and beyond the call of duty, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army and reflect the greatest credit upon himself, his unit, and the Armed Forces.

"Mr. Gorbachev: Tear Down This Wall!"

Mr. Obama: Take notes!

As Rob Port at Say Anything noted yesterday, Barack Obama will apparently be "too busy" to attend ceremonies celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall. Funny! Candidate Obama made speeches in Germany, posed in front of 10 Downing Street and flew to Copenhagen at the drop of a hat to try to strengthen Chicago's bid for the Olympics, but when one of our allies actually invites him to participate in the commemoration of the historic event that symbolizes the ending of the Cold War, Obama has only a cold shoulder for Angela Merkel!

I wonder, aside from Obama's coziness with leftist dictators, if he would have had to say something complimentary about Ronald Reagan, to the dismay of his nutwing base (some of whom childishly call the great man "Raygun" to this day)?

Or is it simply his disdain for democratic societies and their achievements that puts off Obama so?

Rick Richman writes:
If he cannot bring himself to see the importance of this issue on the merits, perhaps his political advisers will consider the optics of his ending his first year in office with (1) a trip to Copenhagen on behalf of his hometown, (2) a trip to Oslo to pick up a prize he admits he does not deserve, and (3) a failure to take a trip to Berlin to help celebrate his country’s historic accomplishment. History will notice his absence, and the electorate may as well.

It would be an embarrassment for this country to have the purported Leader of the Free World conspicuous in his absence from the commemoration of the tearing down of the Berlin Wall.

Mr. Obama: Get your ass in gear!

Plastic Surgery Tax

...because only rich people should be beautiful!

First introduced last July, Senate considers 10% tax on plastic surgery to pay for healthcare reform, what do "boob jobs" and rhinoplasty have to do with basic universal healthcare, other than being a cash cow the government can milk for funds?

Also, nothing says "regressive" like a tax that targets mostly women!

A plastic surgeon at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., Roth also tried to make cosmetic procedures more politically correct. He disputed that the tax would hurt the wealthy, arguing that most patients save for years for treasured procedures. Plus, he said, the tax would discriminate against women, who make up 86% of the patient list.

White House Micromanages Supreme Court Nominee

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
The White House trusts her to interpret the Constitution, but not to dress herself?

Interesting story out of New Haven, CT. regarding newly minted Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

NEW HAVEN — Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor said Saturday her grueling nomination process was a tightly-scripted event, right down to the dress picked out for her.
Is that sexist? Does the White House pick out outfits for the men being confirmed to appointed offices?

Sotomayor even explained that she’d gone shopping for clothes to wear to her acceptance ceremony, but government officials instead told her to bring five suits, one of which they would recommend for her to wear,

Remember the brouhaha over Sarah Palin's wardrobe? Al Gore's "Alpha Male" flannel shirts? Dressing for success is a part of modern electioneering, but Supreme Court nominees??? How image conscious is the White House to need to micromanage the wardrobe of a person whose working garb will consist primarily of a black robe?

People who listened to her speech said she revealed many details of the nomination process to the nation’s highest court

Obama Vs. The Democrats

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Obama's decision to declare war on Fox News, is ill advised for any number of reasons. One is that a certain kind of Democrat, we'll call them "open minded" Democrats, listen to Fox News, some of them, on a daily basis.

According to a recent Pew Poll, more Democrats have a favorable view of Fox News than they do of the New York Times.

These Democrats are probably the ones who would be willing to stand with the President when he makes statements like this:

This is not a war of choice. This is a war of necessity. Those who attacked America on 9/11 are plotting to do so again. If left unchecked, the Taliban insurgency will mean an even larger safe haven from which al Qaeda would plot to kill more Americans. So this is not only a war worth fighting. This is a — this is fundamental to the defense of our people.

-Barack Hussein Obama, August 17, 2009

Unfortunately, the Left Wing nutroots base of his party, we'll call them "Kool-Aid Drinking Democrats", are ready to storm the White House with pitchforks over Obama's failure to withdraw the troops from Afghanistan.

Not content to merely offend the nutroots, Obama may have alienated the rest of the Democratic party as well with his war on Fox News! Smooth move, 'Bamster!

The Huffington Post Deathwatch

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Not just a fashion accessory anymore!

I came across, what was to me, an interesting story about the Huffington Post (or Puffington Host- your choice!), something that surprised me down to my toenails!

The Huffington Post is in danger of going out of business! No, that's not what surprised me. What surprised me was the fact that they were ever in business!

Notwithstanding her critique of the pursuit of success, wealth and recognition, a little less than a year ago Arianna picked up $25 million, mostly, or all, from one presumably star-struck investor, Fred Harman at a rumored $100M implicit market valuation.

There are those who believe that Arianna sprinkled fairy dust into Fred’s eyes to make him believe that it was a great business proposition, not a vanity/propaganda organ that will never pick up enough cash to cover its burn rate. It’s not a business and never will be.

I had always thought that the Huff Po was the Internet equivalent of a vanity press, a supposedly trendy place for celebrities to hang out and publish left of center fluff and nonsense to the delight of others who were trendy and left of center.
Never in my wildest dreams did I picture this as an investment with expectations of monetary returns!

Am I the only one who didn't recognize the business model:

2) Make tons o' money?

Call for Joe Biden's Resignation...

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

...from the Left! Arianna Huffington:
I have an idea for how he can capitalize on all the attention, and do what generations to come will always be grateful for: resign.

To be sure, Arianna is just parroting the anti-war Left's talking points, which stand in rich contrast to remarks made by our Commander-in-Chief just a few short weeks ago:

This is not a war of choice. This is a war of necessity. Those who attacked America on 9/11 are plotting to do so again. If left unchecked, the Taliban insurgency will mean an even larger safe haven from which al Qaeda would plot to kill more Americans. So this is not only a war worth fighting. This is a — this is fundamental to the defense of our people.

-Barack Hussein Obama, August 17, 2009

She concludes her article:
Newsweek's profile makes much of Joe Biden's loyalty. He's a "team player," one close friend says. And after he dissented on Afghanistan this spring he "quickly got on board."

I have no doubt that Joe Biden is a loyal guy -- the question is who deserves his loyalty most? His "team" isn't the White House, but the whole country. And if it becomes clear in the coming days that his loyalty to these two teams is in conflict, he should do the right thing. And quit.

Obama may be no drama, but Biden loves drama. And what could more dramatic than resigning the vice presidency on principle? And what principle could be more honorable than refusing to go along with a policy of unnecessarily risking American blood and treasure -- and America's national security? Now that would be a Whisky (sic) Tango Foxtrot moment for the McChrystal crowd -- one that would be a lot more significant than some lame, after-the-fact apology delivered in a too-late-to-matter book.

So the guy that "got on board" is now going to stand on principle???
So much comedy on the Left, so little time!

Captain Wesley L. Fox

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as commanding officer of Company A, in action against the enemy in the northern A Shau Valley. Capt. (then 1st Lt.) Fox's company came under intense fire from a large well concealed enemy force. Capt. Fox maneuvered to a position from which he could assess the situation and confer with his platoon leaders. As they departed to execute the plan he had devised, the enemy attacked and Capt. Fox was wounded along with all of the other members of the command group, except the executive officer. Capt. Fox continued to direct the activity of his company. Advancing through heavy enemy fire, he personally neutralized 1 enemy position and calmly ordered an assault against the hostile emplacements. He then moved through the hazardous area coordinating aircraft support with the activities of his men. When his executive officer was mortally wounded, Capt. Fox reorganized the company and directed the fire of his men as they hurled grenades against the enemy and drove the hostile forces into retreat. Wounded again in the final assault, Capt. Fox refused medical attention, established a defensive posture, and supervised the preparation of casualties for medical evacuation. His indomitable courage, inspiring initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger inspired his marines to such aggressive action that they overcame all enemy resistance and destroyed a large bunker complex. Capt. Fox's heroic actions reflect great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps, and uphold the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

At the moment he (Obama) seems a sort of anti-Lincoln. President Lincoln was early on damaged by Gen. George McClellan's leaking to his friends in the press, but Lincoln every day was focused on one thing, the war, and took no offense. He knew what was urgent. For Mr. Obama, many things are urgent. But when many things are urgent, nothing really is urgent.

After political crusades for "affordable housing" ended up ruining the housing market and much of the economy with it, many of the same politicians are now carrying on a crusade for "affordable health care." Refusing to pay those costs means that you are just not going to continue getting the same quantity and quality-- regardless of what any politician says or how well he says it.

Di Fi Tells Obama: Listen to Your Generals

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

On This Week on ABC, Dianne Feinstein was asked about Afghanistan.

STEPHANOPOULOS: You met with the president this week. He had a group of members of Congress and senators down to meet with him. And I -- we -- we know -- and you saw Secretary Clinton say that, as well -- the president seems to have ruled out immediate withdrawal...

FEINSTEIN: That's correct.

STEPHANOPOULOS: ... from Afghanistan or a major increase of troops, in the hundreds of thousands. But did he reveal anything else about his thinking? And what did you recommend to him?

FEINSTEIN: Well, what he revealed was his thinking up to this point, and that the fact that he wanted to hear from various members, and some of us spoke up. And I'll tell you what I said. I reviewed all of the intelligence and looked at the situation, and it was pretty clear to me that violence was up 100 percent, 950 attacks in August. The Taliban now controls 37 percent of the people in the areas where these people are. Attrition in police is running 67 percent, either killed or leaving the service.

And the mission is in serious jeopardy. I think General McChrystal, who is one of our very best, if not the best at this, has said a counterterrorism strategy will not work. The president said to us very clearly, just as you said, George, we will not pull out.

Now, if you're going to stay, you have to have a way of winning. The question is, what is that way? And I think the counterinsurgency strategy, which means protecting the people, not shooting from afar, but securing, taking, holding, and providing security for a period of time is really critical.

The money quote is in this next exchange:

STEPHANOPOULOS: That leads to -- that leads to a key question that I know the White House was debating, actually, this week. In order to defeat Al Qaida, do you need to completely defeat the Taliban or can you learn to live with the Taliban?

What's your answer to that question, Senator Feinstein?

FEINSTEIN: I think it depends on what you mean by "Taliban." I think if you take the Haqqani network, which I gather was generally responsible for the bombing of the interior ministry in Kabul, I think they're hardcore fanatics.

If you look back, too, at Taliban control, when it had more in the earlier days, and I've got to tell you, I particularly worry about women in Afghanistan, acid in their face of children, girl children who go to school, women who can't work when they're widowed, huddled on the streets, begging, women beaten and shot in stadiums, you know, Sharia law with all of its violence, I mean, that's one element of the -- of the Taliban.

I think we need to look for those warlords that we can work with, those Pashtuns who want to work for stability, for good, solid governance. I don't think we can make the country into a Jeffersonian democracy, but I do think you -- you've got to stabilize this country.

You leave this country, and the Taliban are increasing all of the time. They're taking over more. It will have a dramatic impact on Pakistan one day. I really believe that.

FEINSTEIN: Now, should we stay there for 10, 12 years? General, I don't think so. I don't think the American people are up for that or want that. But I think -- I don't know how you put somebody in who was as crackerjack as General McChrystal, who gives the president very solid recommendations, and not take those recommendations if you're not going to pull out.

If you don't want to take the recommendations, then you -- you -- you put your people in such jeopardy, just like the base in Nuristan. We lost eight of our men. We didn't have the ability to defend them, and now the base is closing, and effectively we're -- we're retreating away from it. And so I think the decision has to be made sooner, rather than later.

Forty Thousand Troops? How About Sixty Thousand?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Washington - Gen. Stanley McChrystal's troop request for Afghanistan includes an option to send at least 60,000 additional American forces to buttress the war effort there – a higher troop request than previously known.

General McChrystal, the top US commander in Afghanistan, included in his classified troop request a "menu" of options, with the high number thought to be about 40,000 reinforcements. But Obama administration officials are confirming privately that the high end is more than 60,000.

The higher number, reported first by The Wall Street Journal on Friday, may be McChrystal's straw man – likely to be knocked down but useful as a negotiation point in getting more troops than he might otherwise. Some experts, though, say the military is not prone to playing a numbers game to try to hedge its bets.

"The military doesn't do that as far as I know," says Karin von Hippel, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a think tank in Washington. McChrystal "was doing a very realistic assessment."

Was the 40,000 number released to blur the lines of what's really needed to win in Afghanistan?

Nobel Peace Prize Losers 2009

In case you were wondering if someone more worthy than The One™ was passed over for a Nobel Peace Prize, consider the following:

Sima Samar, women’s rights activist in Afghanistan: “With dogged persistence and at great personal risk, she kept her schools and clinics open in Afghanistan even during the most repressive days of the Taliban regime, whose laws prohibited the education of girls past the age of eight. When the Taliban fell, Samar returned to Kabul and accepted the post of Minister for Women’s Affairs.”

Ingrid Betancourt: French-Colombian ex-hostage held for six years.

Dr. Denis Mukwege: Doctor, founder and head of Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. He has dedicated his life to helping Congolese women and girls who are victims of gang rape and brutal sexual violence.”

Handicap International and Cluster Munition Coalition: “These organizations are recognized for their consistently serious efforts to clean up cluster bombs, also known as land mines. Innocent civilians are regularly killed worldwide because the unseen bombs explode when stepped upon.”

Hu Jia, a human rights activist and an outspoken critic of the Chinese government, who was sentenced last year to a three-and-a-half-year prison term for ‘inciting subversion of state power.’”

Wei Jingsheng, who spent 17 years in Chinese prisons for urging reforms of China’s communist system. He now lives in the United States.”

Hmm...Seventeen years in a Chinese prison vs. eleven days playing Chinese fire drill in the White House... Tough decision!

Of course Barack and Michelle Obama failed in Copenhagen. Their strategy could not possibly succeed. In their academic arrogance, they thought they could sell a product they clearly do not believe in (the United States) and moreover, they could do so by stressing the benefits to the seller (Chicago) and not the buyer (the IOC). And to top it off, they committed the faux pas of talking too much about the sales force (themselves) and not about the product or the buyer.

Top Ten Reasons to Give Obama a Nobel Peace Prize

Top Ten Reasons to Give Obama a Nobel Peace Prize:

10. First eleven days of his administration, he didn’t invade the Sudetenland
9. He keeps Joe Biden out of the Situation Room AND “the Loop“!
8. Lobbying with First Dog Bo to give dogs the vote.
7. Keeps sending Hillary out of the country. (per Bill C.)
6. Took missiles out of Poland because of all those jokes he heard growing up.
5. Managed to successfully avoid confrontation with anti-war protester Cindy Sheehan
4. Personally kept New York City on terror alert readiness with low level fly bys of Air Force one
3. Encouraged inventor of gas mask bra every time Michelle wasn’t looking.
2. Successfully lobbied for independence for eight of the 58 states.

And the number one reason to give Obama a Nobel Peace Prize?

1. He single handedly saved Chicago from invasion by foreigners.

Barack Wins Publisher's Clearing House, er, Nobel Peace Prize!

Anyone else feel they woke up in Bizarro world this AM? Barack Obama, Rookie President of the United States, was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize sometime between his inauguration on January 20th and February 1st. when the nominations closed.

Let me see...what did Obama do in the first eleven days of his presidency to so impress the Nobel committee? Could it have been the unbearable lightness of his being??

The award of this year’s Nobel peace prize to President Obama will be met with widespread incredulity,

Incredulity is one word. Why the big rush? Isn't The One™ going to be here for at least four years? Is the Nobel committee afraid that Obama is going to do something to screw up his Nobel chances over the next four years? Or are they trying to proactively herd him farther to the Left as quickly as possible by demonstrating the love and adulation they are ready to heap upon him for doing so?

If the nominations and subsequent awards to Jimmy Carter and Al Gore weren't proof enough of the purely political, left of center partisan bias of the committee, the nomination of Barack H. Obama for a Nobel Peace Prize merely for parroting whatever his teleprompter tells him should erase all doubt.

For a sense of balance, the WSJ reminds us:
Examples of nominees who didn't win the peace prize include Josef Stalin, the Soviet dictator, and Adolf Hitler, whose name was put forward in 1939.

The Medal of Honor

Captain Robert F. Foley

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Capt. Foley's company was ordered to extricate another company of the battalion. Moving through the dense jungle to aid the besieged unit, Company A encountered a strong enemy force occupying well concealed, defensive positions, and the company's leading element quickly sustained several casualties. Capt. Foley immediately ran forward to the scene of the most intense action to direct the company's efforts. Deploying 1 platoon on the flank, he led the other 2 platoons in an attack on the enemy in the face of intense fire. During this action both radio operators accompanying him were wounded. At grave risk to himself he defied the enemy's murderous fire, and helped the wounded operators to a position where they could receive medical care. As he moved forward again 1 of his machinegun crews was wounded. Seizing the weapon, he charged forward firing the machinegun, shouting orders and rallying his men, thus maintaining the momentum of the attack. Under increasingly heavy enemy fire he ordered his assistant to take cover and, alone, Capt. Foley continued to advance firing the machinegun until the wounded had been evacuated and the attack in this area could be resumed. When movement on the other flank was halted by the enemy's fanatical defense, Capt. Foley moved to personally direct this critical phase of the battle. Leading the renewed effort he was blown off his feet and wounded by an enemy grenade. Despite his painful wounds he refused medical aid and persevered in the forefront of the attack on the enemy redoubt. He led the assault on several enemy gun emplacements and, single-handedly, destroyed 3 such positions. His outstanding personal leadership under intense enemy fire during the fierce battle which lasted for several hours, inspired his men to heroic efforts and was instrumental in the ultimate success of the operation. Capt. Foley's magnificent courage, selfless concern for his men and professional skill reflect the utmost credit upon himself and the U.S. Army.

Captain Foley: We humbly salute you and thank you for your service.

Krauthammer on Obama and Afghanistan

It isn't as if Afghanistan sprung up on [Obama] a week ago. It has been around for eight years. He has been running for president for two years on a promise to resource the war adequately, to look at it seriously, and to win it. That's what the Democrats had proposed.

So it has been a serious issue for over two years. He says in March – he announces on March 27 – “there is a new comprehensive strategy,” so he has been thinking about this. And then he added, which is not often remembered, “this comes at the conclusion of a review.”

Then he goes through all the people he consulted with [in that review]: the commanders on the ground, allies, NGOs and the governments in Afghanistan and Pakistan and members of Congress. It was a serious review in March.

He appoints his own general later and then he says two months ago it is a war of necessity. You would think he has thought it through.

And now all of a sudden he is rethinking it. It is because of the political pressure. The public opinion polls are going negative on him. He has gotten [resistance from] his left in the party, and it is all about the politics. It is not about the strategy.

Bra Doubles as Gas Mask

You may have heard recently, of the inventor who created a bra that doubles as a gas mask in an emergency. (Motto: One for you and one to share!)

The obvious moral dilemma for the wearer, is with whom to share in the event it becomes necessary? The not so obvious problem is for all of those women who use the product as designed who then become technically, if only temporarily, "indigent", as they have no visible means of support!

Justice is Not Only Blind...

...but I stole her seeing eye dog as well!

Justice will have to muddle along without me for a while I guess! When voir dire started last week and I stated that I was a blogger in my spare time. The defense attorney asked me if it was my ambition to be the jury foreman. But, I've herded enough cats in my day, so I figured as long as someone else wanted the job, that was fine with me.

Today, it was the DA's bite at the apple. He recalled that I had said my blog was "mostly political", so he asked if I was a Democrat or a Republican. This drew an objection from the defense counsel (the first I'd ever heard in jury selection) which was sustained by the judge. The DA then asked which way I leaned when I blog, to which I replied, "Back in my chair." This got a pretty good laugh (I'm here all week. Try the veal!) But afterward, I admitted that my blog tilts right of center. (Possibly right of Attila the Hun, but there was no sense volunteering that! )

I believe that was the beginning of the end. I survived the first several rounds of peremptory challenges. After the seventh or eighth person had been excused, I thought I might actually end up on this jury. But, after defense counsel had a lengthy discussion with the defendant, I was excused with thanks for my service. (Either that, or when I came back to court in my serape, with an unlit cheroot clamped in my teeth, whistling the tune from "Hang 'em High", they might have gotten the wrong idea!)

Now for the test: Which of those three items can you not bring into a courthouse in San Joaquin County in California:
A) a pocket knife
B) a quarter
C) a keyring screw driver

Answer: A) and C)

I knew better than to bring a pocket knife through the metal detector, but I was flat out dumbfounded that I couldn't bring the tiny screwdriver on my keyring into the courthouse. The quarter is there for size comparison. My post office box key is longer and pointier. I've carried that same screw driver on countless airplanes all over this country and Canada, but the San Joaquin County courthouse is safe from the threat I pose to loose screws everywhere!

And you thought the TSA was bad!

On a Personal Note

Blogging may be a little light for the next few days as I exercise one of my civic duties by appearing for jury duty. Defense counsel hasn't bounced me for cause yet, so I suppose the little noose I was braiding in the jury box was all for naught!

All kidding aside, it is serious business to see that individuals receive fair trials and are convicted or acquitted and justice service based solely on the evidence presented at trial.

If I were ever in a similar situation, I would hope that the jurors are all reasonable citizens who are paying close attention!

"Sacrifice" is in the Eye of the Beholder

In professional sports, only a comparative handful make it to the top of their game.

There's only one Tiger Woods.

Millions of people aspire to be movie stars, but only a handful are household names.

There's only one Tom Hanks.

Likewise, only a small handful of politicians make it to the top of their game: President of the United States.
No one denies or should deny Barack Obama, nor his wife, the perquisites of power. That comes with the office. So, when we hear that the trip to Copenhagen for Barack and Michelle cost the taxpayer between $1.1 and $1.4 million dollars, we don't begrudge the Obamas the finest personal protection in the world. And certainly no one expects the Leader of the Free World to fly coach!

First class trip, first class accommodations, first class cuisine...no problem with any of that. POTUS and FLOTUS represent the people of the United States of America, the world's last great superpower, perhaps the greatest nation on Earth, perhaps the greatest in the history of the world.

So, while ensconced in the lap of luxury, would it be too much to ask our representatives to knock off the phony self deprecation? The idea that Michelle knows anyone who thinks that her trip to Europe was a "sacrifice" of any kind is highly unlikely, especially considering the price tag on the their latest jaunt to Europe.

No more poor little rich girl, okay Michelle? Wear your $600 sneaks to charity events and take Air Force One for a spin whenever it suits your fancy. But, maybe your "sacrifice" could be just stop talking about it for the next four years?

A grateful nation salutes you!

Obama and McChrystal in Copenhagen

That famous "25 minute conference" between Obama and McChrystal: Was that a dressing down from the CinC?

UK Telegraph: The relationship between President Barack Obama and the commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan has been put under severe strain by Gen Stanley McChrystal's comments on strategy for the war.

According to sources close to the administration, Gen McChrystal shocked and angered presidential advisers with the bluntness of a speech given in London last week.

The next day he was summoned to an awkward 25-minute face-to-face meeting on board Air Force One on the tarmac in Copenhagen, where the president had arrived to tout Chicago's unsuccessful Olympic bid.

So, Obama meets with his top commander in the field for only the second time in as many months or more, but was it to tell him to STFU?

...In London, Gen McChrystal, who heads the 68,000 US troops in Afghanistan as well as the 100,000 Nato forces, flatly rejected proposals to switch to a strategy more reliant on drone missile strikes and special forces operations against al-Qaeda.

He told the Institute of International and Strategic Studies that the formula, which is favoured by Vice-President Joe Biden, would lead to "Chaos-istan".

When asked whether he would support it, he said: "The short answer is: No."

He went on to say: "Waiting does not prolong a favorable outcome. This effort will not remain winnable indefinitely, and nor will public support."

The remarks have been seen by some in the Obama administration as a barbed reference to the slow pace of debate within the White House.

Given their relative levels of military experience, I would tend to support the judgment of General McChrystal over that of the Ditherer-in-Chief.

On a possibly related note, Move-On dot org is circulating a petition for " a clear military exit strategy". Not victory and an exit strategy. Not eliminate bin Laden or Al-Qaeda and exit, just cut and run. *Sigh.*

Obama Spoofed on SNL

Two big accomplishments: "Jack" and "Squat".

I saw a bit of this on FNS. Flopping Aces had the video.

Ron Paul on Iranian Diplomacy

The following is not an endorsement of Dr. Paul or his views. His domestic policies notwithstanding, his opinions on diplomacy do not represent the opinions of this blog.

(What Obama knew and when he knew it @ 1:31)

Remember how Obama was "Shocked. Shocked!!" to hear about Iran's second nuclear facility at Qom just after his "Rosy Scenario Let's All Hold Hands and Lay Down Our Nukes" speech at the UN? Iran doesn't need even a single nuclear facility to produce peaceful domestic energy, much less a second one.

According to Dr. Paul, the US has known about this "secret" facility since 2006 and Obama was briefed on it personally in November of last year, after the election. (See video @ 1:31)

Overlooking Paul's views on "neocons" and plots against Iranian diplomacy, it is interesting that rather than to rally the nations of the UN to deal with the real and growing nuclear problem in Iran, Obama chose to focus on an imaginary world without nukes, where we all presumably sit around the campfire and sing Kum-bay-yah! And he certainly knew about what Iran was doing well in advance of his speech!

the biggest disappointment of the weekend is Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story (Overture). After a $57K per theatre average on 4 screens last weekend, the picture broke to a wider 962 locations with terrible results. The "documentary" only sold an estimated $1.3M in tickets to start the weekend, and it will finish at about $3.9M for a PTA of less than $4,000. That soft opening will almost certainly make Capitalism Moore's weakest-grossing movie since 2002's Bowling for Columbine ($21.5M domestic gross).

Amateur Hour at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue: The Road Show

Smart lawyers know that one of the keys to success in open court, is not to ask any question that you don't know the answer to. The key to successful international summits, is to work out all of the details of whatever you are going to announce, before you ever depart for the summit.

Then you have Barack Hussein Obama. No US President in history had personally lobbied the International Olympic Committee to host the Olympics in a US city. You'd think, that according to the rules of successful international summits, that Obama and his handlers would not let him get embroiled in any international undertaking that did not have overwhelming odds of success.

Cue the trip to Copenhagen. Michelle and Barry shanghaied Oprah Winfrey to help them present Chicago's case to the IOC. Chicago was the very first city eliminated after the Obamas made their case.

Now, there is speculation that Obama was coerced into supporting this losing cause by political supporters as payback for their political patronage. Or maybe he just believes the hype and thought the power of his shining personality was enough to carry the day? Either way, he comes out of it looking weaker than when he went in.

The twenty five minute meeting with General McChrystal, tacked on at the end of his abortive Olympic diplomacy, in the midst of a fourteen hour plane ride to Copenhagen (or Oblivion - choose one), will provide little cover for the overall failure of the mission.

Amateur hour continues apace both at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and on the road!
